I learned that pou are statements of tikanga which is really awesome, much more than a sculpture or symbol in the way that we would think about in English/Pākehā culture. I also learned that whakapapa includes notable events and feel I have a stronger understanding of the difference between whakapapa and whanaungatanga.

Coming from the North Island, I grew up surrounded by Ngai Te Rangi iwi processes and tikanga so Ōtākou Marae was the first marae I have gone to in the South Island and it was amazing to see the difference in tikanga and actually connect with the tangata whenua of the South!

I was very sceptical about this wānanga. I worried that this was going to be a performative exercise so that the University appeared “culturally aware”But I am pleased to have been proved wrong. This was a beautiful experience where I was taught so much about Māori culture and ways of being. I truly have a greater understanding and love for Te Ao Māori and it has made me far more reciprocative to Māori cultural norms e.g karakia.

Additionally, I have made lots of new friends that I can see turning into life long friendships. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity.

I have developed a high respect for Tikanga Māori and understood its fundamental concepts. Tikanga Māori has concepts which align quite a lot to my personal cultural and spiritual . This Wānaga has really expanded my understanding and shown that Tikanga Māori is essential for our legal system and a bilingual legal system is needed. As someone had already stated I also thought this would be a performative approach by the university but this for real was the most interesting and informative week. I will miss this section of second year law.
