Traditional classroom environments are often not the most appropriate context for the effective development of key competences. The key competence approach, with its emphasis on the application of knowledge in real world situations represents a significant departure from traditional content-based approaches where subjects are taught and assessed discretely. The main recommended approach to teaching key competences is through the provision of interactive learning environments in which learners can engage in practical, inquiry-based tasks. These environments present open-ended problems and challenges to be solved through debate, experimentation, exploration and creativity.
In summary, teaching key competences involves a greater emphasis on interactive learning environments, allowing students to work in teams on multidisciplinary topics, benefit from technology enhanced learning, and have the mental, physical, social and emotional space to collaborate on solving problems.
KEY PRINCIPLES
1)teaching should be task-based.
2) teaching should be interdisciplinary
3) learning should be both collaborative and individualised
4) teaching needs to be both learner- and teacher-led
5) teaching and learning where possible should be technologically innovative
6) teaching and learning of key competences should take place both inside and outside of school
7) teachers should collaborate with the wider community including the social, cultural and business sectors to create more opportunities for real world learning
8) the teaching of key competences requires teachers to pay closer attention to the social and emotional aspects of learning, including the quality of relationships between and among teachers and learners

Starting from school equipment and structure, to curriculum programs, ending to the teaching methods... Italian school is completely different from Finnish school.

But something is moving, especially in primary school.

In primary school we use to teach both outside and inside the school, developing the knowledge of the territory and of the world around us. We usually take great care about all the emotional aspects of learning and of relationship in school.

Active learning, cooperative learning, self- and peer assessment, formative and continuous assessment are normally used as a repertory of teaching-learning good practices.

Collaboration amongst teachers is maybe the hardest point to develop, because of different concepts on teaching, different methods, different involvement in innovation and experimentation. But also in this field....something is moving.
Step by step we can learn how to change our teaching methods and prepare a small "revolution" in the Italian school.

The way a teacher assesses his students depends mainly on the teacher's vision of the learning-teaching process.
In primary school, both formative and summative assessment are used, in order to have a 360° degrees view on the pupil and on his learning path.
Self- and peer- assessment are now increasingly important to lead the teaching work to project-based and competence-based activity, because they help students to become aware of their learning strategies, strengths and weaknesses
