The 509th Composite Group was the weapon delivery arm of the Manhattan Project. Prior to being stationed on Tinian Island, the 509th underwent extensive training with the modified B-29 Superfortress at Wendover Army Air Field in Wendover, Utah. The purpose of the 509 was to build a plan to bomb or nuke the city of Hiroshima in Japan. Gen. Paul Tibbets headed up that group and flew a B-29 named The Enola Gay in August 1945. 
- Their mission was to create a bombing plan that would completely knock out and crush Japan from the war. 
- They would take a run at the city of Hiroshima with a nuke called,         "Little Boy" and try to end the run of Japan and take victory in the Pacific
- After the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan didn't surrender so they planned another bombing on the city of Nagasaki.
- Tibbits conducted another plan with the B-29, Bockscar. Their nuke, "Fat Man"

Tibbits: The main leader and commander of the 509 CG. He was the leader that planned the attacks on Hiroshima. Tibbits came up with his crew and they ended up successfully bombing Hiroshima. Tibbits also made secret practices and secret Air force bases where no one could find out about the bombings.
Commander Major Sweeney: The leader of the Bockscar and the planner of the Nagasaki bombing. Was helped with by Tibbits but Sweeney took his crew to Nagasaki and finished the war in the Pacific.

Six B-29s visually attacked targets at Yokkaichi, Uwajima, Tsuruga, and Tokushima on 8 August, bombing two primary and three secondary targets with five bombs.

The 509th Composite Group returned to the United States on 6 November 1945, and was stationed at Roswell Army Airfield, New Mexico.

Colonel William H. Blanchard replaced Tibbets as group commander on 22 January 1946, and also became the first commander of the 509th Bombardment Wing.
