         <title>Indus River</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Indus River impacted the development of cities in the Indus River Valley. Located in modern-day Pakistan, the strong flooding of this river forced ancient civilizations that lived along it to build strong protection barriers, such as levees. Human-made islands were constructed to raise cities above possible flood waters as well.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Yellow River Valley civilization justified their power cycle through the idea of the Mandate of Heaven--of which was based off the flooding of the Yellow River. If the river flooded, or another catastrophe occurred, then the ruling dynasty was thought to have lost the support of heaven and its gods. Consequently, the civilization had to decide on another ruler.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Located in present-day Iraq and in the Fertile&nbsp;Crescent, the Tigris and Euphrates rivers provided fertile soil to ancient peoples that were previously nomads and did not know how to farm. Accordingly, they began to learn how to utilize the land to grow crops. Subsequently, the first agricultural societies developed in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley--the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.</div>]]></description>

Hence, the people who settled there--originally the Maya--were forced to create innovative ways to manage water. To meet this challenge, the Maya built reservoirs and cisterns that collected rainwater. </div>]]></description>

Meanwhile, the city of Liège has a German-speaking population. </div>]]></description>
