Yanek and his family live in Krakow, Poland. But in just a blink of an eye, their city was invaded by the Germans beginning WWII. For now, Yanek and his family remain in Krakow. FOr a little while they stay in their flat with several other families. Anti-Semitic rules have been in place that persecute Jewish people. taking away any rights they had. Over time, walls are built up around the ghetto contain the remaining Jews who have not been taken for resettlement or deportation yet. One-by-one many Jews were relocated to other Jewish ghettos, work camps, concentration camps or were killed on site.

Yanek was scared and worried about what was going to happen. When he arrived at the death camp Yanek yelled his uncle Moshes name and was almost killed by the Nazis. after a while he was very overworked and barley could move until he found a loose floor board to sleep under.

When yanek got into the gas chamber he started to ask to die and was standing under the shower head. when water came out he kept saying that he is still alive. And he starts brushing his teeth with water and rinsing his body everyday to feel like a human. Also he goes into the back of the line for food to get better chunks.
