At a young age, Asher B. Durand was an apprentice to an engraver. He became well known for his banknotes and engravings of other artists works. He, like Church, was also very good at depicting natural light in paintings. His painting "The Beech's" painted in 1845, shows this talent very well.

Jasper Cropsey had mixed feelings about the move west. He wanted it to happen as he usually depicted in his paintings. But he also had feelings about the nature that was there which is also depicted in his paintings. Many of his paintings have something to do with the western movement as seen here in "Catskill Mountain House" painted in 1855.

Albert Bierstadt became one of the artists that specialized in the American West. He like many others that were in the school specialized in lights and shadows in their paintings. His "Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak" sold for $25,000 which was the most anybody had ever paid for a painting. "Domes of the Yosemite" painted in 1863 depicts his ability to use shadows and light very well.
