This painting uses styles such as his 3/4s face view style adding a new way of art perspective. Made lifelike details like the wrinkles in his face and the eye texture to influence new style in this time period. Some people believe that this could have been what Jan looked like because it was one of his only portraits that had the person looking at the viewer and was a new concept to portraiture at this time.

Him and his brother Hubert created the flemish art school. Jan was considered the best artist in his time period. Jan and Hubert created the Ghent masterpiece which was an incredibly famous piece at this time. Jan and his brother became personal painters of Philip lll the burgundy duke. In 1421 Jan went to paint at the Hague and left his brother and Philip lll. In 1424 Jan gained a ton of social status from being a famous Hague Painter and started to paint for Philip lll again and remained loyal to him for the rest of his life. Jan was loyal because he was payed very well by Phillip lll.

Jan used styles that have never been seen before. His incredible detail such as the mirror having a reflection of himself. He put himself in this painting because he was here to witness the wedding. This painting includes many symbols of marriage and happiness. These were examples including a dog, a bed, fruit, a chandelier, and cast off shoes which were popular at this time.

Jan made many details that all had purpose and told a story and there was a ton of that in this portrait. The man is holding a script and there are words under the man that apear to say LEAL SOVVENIR. When translated to english these words come to say "loyal remembrance". You can also notice that the man is looking away from the viewer giving it a 3/4s face view. This was new to the world of art and was one of the many ways Jan influenced modern art.
