Some popular artists of this genre were Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Clarence Carter and Ray Charles. It is influenced by a few different things, two being rock and roll and gospel. Common instruments in southern soul include electric guitar, drums, organ, and bass guitar. The purpose of this music is to focus more on the "groove" of the music and not on the lyrics.
