Alice in Wonderland (1865) was a "hallmark" text as it not have a moral. This book broke traditions, as it broke the code of teaching children a lesson. Moral tales had a message to teach children in learning about life, how to behave, and to have good manners.   • When responding to texts, it is vital to encourage kids to express how they feel about a particular book.

    • Questions 4 an aesthetic response (seeking an emotional or life response): 

    1. • What do you think about the story?
    2. • Has anything like this ever happened 2 you
    3. • What would you change in the story?
    4. • How do you think the characters felt when… 

    • Question 4 an efferent response (seeking information): 
    1. • What was the main idea in the story?
    2. • Tell me the order of the events in the story.
    3. • Describe the main character.
    4. • What was the problem in the story? How was it solved?
    5. • Is this book fact or fiction?

    Discussions can go 3 different ways: 


    Discussion about texts

    1.       Teacher-led

    Teacher will ask the question--> students respond-->teacher evaluates

    2.       Teacher-lead, but student centred

    Teacher models, scaffolds give instructions-->students encouraged 2 responsibility --> roles shared

    3.       Student led

    Students select book --> teacher gives a synopsis --students take on roles during the discussion (readers circle).
