6 Canons of Chinese Painting

1.) Animation through spirit resonance -

Works must have "Qi Yun" a phrase lacking a true translated equivalent, sometimes referred to as breath of life. It seems as though a work must have perhaps what some english speakers may call "soul".

2.) Use of the brush -
Brush stroke quality was judged heavily in Asian artworks as it was the same instrument used in other facets of life. Displaying proficiency and mastery of pressure, wetness, and thickness was very important.

3.) Fidelity to the object in portraying forms -
Works should include some amount of naturalism, reflecting the world from which they were inspired.

4.) Conformity of kind in applying colors -
Even black is considered a color and its range of darkness used to imply shading in the natural world. If colors are added other than black they should be reflective of the true colors of the subject.

5.) Proper planning -
The layout of the work should be premeditated and planned before touching paint to paper.

6.) Transmission of past experience -
This is the canon I struggled most to understand. It seems like ones art should honor those who have come before and should reflect past struggles or events. Perhaps in an effort to keep record and follow the teachings or warnings of your ancestors.

Horror vacui

"Horror vacui" is the fear of empty space in art. Wang Meng used this fear to greta effect in his works depiction of the Forest Grotto. In stark contrast with other artists of his time who mad little use of color and used negative space, Wang Meng makes art that is very busy and clustered. This diversion in style is reflective of the fact that he along the other great masters of the Yuan dynasty rejected life under Mongol rule. They made art and lived lives in contrast to many of those around them who were accepting of the current political state.

Born with the name of Zhu Yuanzhang, this young peasant would eventually become Emperor, the first peasant to do so in 1500 years! His childhood and early life was filled with tragedy and turmoil, eventually leading him to join a rebellious offshoot of the White Lotus Society known as the Red Turbans, known for wearing red head dresses. The Red Turbans would eventually see the Mongol lead Yuan Dynasty fall, and Zhu Yuanzhangn would come into power. He would change is name to Hong Wu as Emperor. Hong Wu coming into power marks the beginning of the Ming dynasty, lasting from 1368 to 1644. Although he was a strict anti-intellectual a resurgence in art would be seen throughout the Ming dynasty after his death in 1398 at the age of 69 after 30 years in power.

Hua Yan (1682-1756) was an eccentric painter who grew up poor, but surrounded by fellow artists. Hr settled in both Hangzhou and Yangzhou and was soon known as one of the Strange Masters of Yangzhou. The subject matter of is works is of greta significance as He was one of the first to express the potentially destructive forces of nature in the form of wildfire. His work titled "Snow on Mount Tian" is also very unique showing a parallel expression of the Camel and its master, calling into question if the experience of crossing vast swaths of land is much different for wither party. Little is known about him however his artwork is very profound and diverse.

Emakimono (translated as "picture rolled" or "picture scroll") is a predominately Japanese style of narrative illustration on a horizontal piece of parchment, specially hand scrolls. They date all the way back to before the 12th century! The scrolls are illustrated so that as they are unwound they tell the story sequentially. Very few survive to this day, only 20 or so are known to have survived intact and are protected as National Treasures of Japan

In 1636 Hong Taiji founded the Qing Dynasty which ruled over its neighbors and would go on to conquer the Chinese with the capture of Beijing in 1644. He made it a point to only recruit Han officials. His victory in Beijing was short lived as Li Zicheng marched a huge force towards the city. Faced with insurmountable odds Hong Taiji hung himself in the gardens outside of the Forbidden city.
