Gillian is the Team Leader for the SPCN, she has been in the team since 2018. She has a magnitude of experience working with individuals within the Palliative Care Team. Gill enjoys gardening, walking her dog Noodle and reading.

Jennie has been part of the team for 20 + years and is our palliative occupational therapist, she enjoys being a Scout Leader and playing piano for her local amateur theatre.

Lisa who has been with the team since 2018 loves her horse Holly!

Pollyanna who has been with the team a few years now enjoys working on her homestead with small animals

Ruth is our emotional & psychological specialist who joined the team.... she loves her cats.

Melanie has an extensive palliative care back ground and has worked in the acute setting until she came to our team 4 years ago. Melanie enjoys going to concerts and the theatre.

Stewart has been with the team for 7 years and he enjoys baking and holidays abroad.

Jo joined us in 2017 after working alongside Bury District nurses for over 10 years, she is now our Education Facilitator. Jo enjoys going to music festivals in her camper van.

Jodie joined the team two years ago coming from a district nursing background. Jodie enjoys spending family time with her young children.

Gemma joint the team two years ago and she enjoys holidays in Cornwall with her family.

Laura is our newest member but no less experienced in palliative care and community services. Laura enjoys holidays and going to concerts and festivals.

Pamela joined the team four years ago, coming from the North Manchester palliative care team.

Caradoc is our palliative care consultant and he works alongside Bury Hospice and Fairfield Macmillan Team.

Psychological symptoms:The Northern Care Alliance (NCA) provides psychological support within its Specialist Palliative Care services. This support includes a community-based counselling service and input from clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists, health psychologists, and cognitive behavioral therapists. The aim is to address the psychological needs of patients and their families dealing with life-limiting illnesses, helping them cope with the emotional and practical challenges that arise.

What is Specialist Palliative Care?

Specialist palliative care is delivered by professionals who are

specially trained to deliver palliative care for complex symptoms,

emotional and psychological well-being and difficult social issues.

They share their specialist knowledge and skills and act as a

resource to the community teams including GPs and other

services to advise and educate them on advances in care.

You may be referred to the team for:

• Pain and symptom control

• Emotional and psychological support for you and your loved

ones

• Supportive rehabilitation to maintain mobility, home

activities and safety

• Understanding your illness and treatment

• For support with planning your future care

• Referral to additional support services if required to help

with benefits/healthy lifestyle advice/employment support

In Palliative Care, Glycopyrronium bromide is used as a second line agent for drying secretions usually after Hyoscine Butylbromide has been used, although in some cases, Glycopyrronium is first line before hyoscine. The injection contains Glycopyrronium bromide 200 microgram per ml, available as 1 ml and 3 ml ampules.

Living with long-term or serious illness brings challenges beyond the illness. Routes to Rights research, a collaborative multi-agency programme, has explored the reality of living with long-term or serious illness and ways of mobilising a connected multi-agency response.

The public and professionals are often unaware of legal rights, entitlements and protections which relate to health and care decision-making and wider aspects of daily life. In terms of daily life, problems around money, jobs, housing and social care are prevalent in this context and cause significant practical challenges and emotional upset. People often struggle to find advice and support - they don't know what to ask or who to ask. As a consequence, many of these problems go unmet. This is despite legal rights, entitlements and protections which are there to safeguard and support. It's just they aren't widely known or enacted. 

The Routes to Rights website (www.routestorights.co.uk) provides public information relating to a range of common issues faced, relating to daily life and health/care decisions. We also host a chatbot, AccessAva, which gives legal information and guidance relating to health and social care. It provides template legal letters, factsheets, and easy read resources based on the specific issues raised with it. AccessAva has been created by legal professionals and is free and confidential.

Being diagnosed with a life-limiting condition will understandably cause you and people close to you anxiety about the future; questions will arise around eventual physical support needs and how you will all cope emotionally. Emotional support is as important as physical treatment in most cases, and by having your emotional needs taken care of as part of a whole-person, holistic approach to your palliative care journey will ensure that you are able to enjoy a better quality of life until the very end
