Symbols:
Laying on of hands: The Bishop stretches out his hand over the children and calls down the power of the Holy Spirit.
Anointing with oil: Anointing is a symbol of being called and strengthened for an important task. In Confirmation being anointed means to go forth in life as a Catholic with strength and confidence.
Words: The Bishop recites the words 'Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.' To be sealed with the Spirit is to be confirmed as a Christian believer.
The sign of peace: The sign of the peace is used within the Confirmation ceremony as a sign of our unity and that we are one people of God. When the Bishop says 'Peace be with you' during Confirmation he is saying it on behalf of the community to symbolise our unity with the Church.

Red has a dual meaning, on one hand red symbolises the shedding of blood so it is used on Palm Sunday but it also signifies the burning fire of God's love so it is also worn for Sacrament of Confirmation for that reason.

History of Confirmation

In the early years of the Catholic church, initiation consisted of immersion in water, laying on of hands and anointing with chrism by the Bishop, and finally joining the community for the first time for communion. Confirmation became separated from Baptism but the order of the Sacraments of initiation didn't change and remained exactly the same-Baptism, then Confirmation and finally Communion (or Eucharist). In 1971 the new rite of Confirmation was issued (Archdiocese Case of Brisbane, 2017). The rite of Confirmation was put back as the link between Baptism and Communion. Confirmation is the Sacrament which seals our Baptism before our undertaking of the final step in becoming a full member of the Catholic church by sharing in the Holy Communion for the first time.
