         <description><![CDATA[<p>During the 1920s, Honduras was known as the “banana republic.”<br>The U.S. companies United Fruit Company and Standard Fruit controlled vast plantations, the ports, and even the railroads.</p><p>But in 1929, with the Wall Street crash, everything changed.</p><p>The demand for bananas collapsed.<br>Exports dropped almost in half.<br>Thousands of Honduran workers lost their jobs, and those who remained employed suffered wage cuts.</p>]]></description>
