I was always fascinated with these jars. The entire process of mummification is a very interesting ancient operation. Each jar holding a different organ with a different purpose was interesting. I love these pieces because the ceremonial process seemed to be so beautiful and respectful, and it made an exponential difference in our understanding of these ancient souls.

Knossos Labyrinth

Ancient Greece has always been such an invigorating mystery. A lot of the "whys?" in the period are unknown. This Labyrinth at the Palace of Knossos and the entire myth of the Minotaur have always been very exciting to me. I have actually always enjoyed playing with and drawing mazes since I was a little girl, so learning about their origin was like fulfilling a creative destiny.

Oratory of Galla Placidia, Ravenna

This one is really beautiful to me, not just the Oratory of Galla Placidia, but Ravenna as a whole. In my own research, I found many beautiful images of chapels and architecture in this Italian city. It is special to me for two reasons. Firstly, my maternal side of the family is from Italy, so I am incredibly interested in the culture and history. Secondly, I love the beauty and history of this town so much that I am, one day, anticipating a daughter, and I want to name her Ravenna.

The Last Judgement, from the Tympanum

This one, to me, is very intriguing. Firstly, my spiritual life appreciates the interpretation of Hell. I have always found them interesting, but what I didn't know before this class was that these images were often created for the illiterate and uneducated, instead of just a testimony to the faith of artists. I selected this piece to represent not just Tympanum itself but to reflect the knowledge that I gained abound religious history in art.
