One reason why I joined this course is for my own professional development. I feel as though I can gain valuable knowledge and skills to better support all the needs inside my classroom. As of right now I have a wide variety of needs and individual plans. This is my first year working with these types of plans as in the past I have worked in kindergarten and never had to make individual plans. I am currently teaching in a 4/5 split class and if I continue to work in this classroom the following year I will have had these students for 2 years. I feel as though it is my duty to do everything I can for them.

Inclusive Classroom Practices

In my board we are big on inclusive classroom practices. We have inclusive education coaches in every school. I feel as though this is becoming more prevalent in the classrooms and I want to be equipped with strategies to accommodate ALL students with disabilities or special needs into the classroom.

My Personal Interest

During my late teens and early adulthood I worked in a special needs camp. I was a counsellor and as the years progressed I moved on to become the behaviour specialist. I wouldn't call myself a specialist but I feel I am great at making connections with all students/people. This camp opened my eyes to working with people with exceptionalities. I have a passion for working in this field and want to advocate for all the learners.

Career Advancement

By taking Special Education courses I feel as though I can open up more doors in a field I truly aspire to work in. This could help me obtain additional qualifications to pursue a role in leadership, a special education teacher, resource specialist or an inclusion coach.

I feel that taking courses such as a course in special education can benefit myself and the students. It will help me better understand how to provide students, and their parents with the best support they can have. It will help me gain insights, knowledge and resources to support students with any/all learning needs. I am truly excited to begin this adventure in special education.

Differentiated Instruction

This topic has been my professional growth plan for this academic year. This is one of the reasons for joining this class. The school I work at asks us to come up with a PGP for the year and focusing on differentiated instruction has really helped me target those needs for specific students. I hope to gain more strategies for differentiated instruction to further meet the needs of all of my students this year and the years to come.
