my bulldog clip

The metallic bulldog clip I have in my hands feels slightly cold. I guess it is because of its metallic essence. It does not actually look like a normal bulldog clip: it seems much more elegant, even though it is probably because of the all-silvery looking material it is made of.
–

I think it can be related to forms coming from nature. Whoever was designing was referencing nature in a way, I am sure, but they also had to deal with its upcoming production.
–

This bulldog clip feels alive in my hands, its energy when contracting and relaxing is perceivable. Its mechanics make it alive, as well as my interaction with it. Its shape reminds me of different things: when I move the clips its form changes. I quite like this transition. I can move one, then the other, or even both at the very same time. When I pick it up my fingers and palms can feel the smoothness of the material. I have to admit I enjoy playing around with it. My hands quite like interact with the clips opening and closing it, clipping a finger, a piece of paper or cloth.
–

Never actually thought this bulldog clip could mean something. But I guess it does now: I purchased it in Turin, where I did my Bachelor. It was during an exam's session period; I felt quite stressed out but wanted to buy it for my next personal projects. Through it I was looking at future possibilities; at what would I ever been able to clip it to. Thoughts on paper? Film rolls? Drawings? (…) Who know what I was thinking of? But, at least, I imagined chances. I am wondering what I am seeing now, what will I see coming next.

coaster

My object is a coaster. Its shape is round, with a short wall going up around its edges. It is made of cork, so the texture is slightly rough, but its weight is then also light. There is a plethora of brown tones within the coaster, and the temperature is everchanging. When it is in contact with something warm, it too becomes warm. The same happens when it is in contact with something cold.

The coaster is designed to be an extension of my body. The design allows it to hold another object, most often a mug, when my own hand doesn’t want to hold the mug.

In terms of value, the coaster means very little to me. It feels cheaply made and holds no sentiment. To me, its meaning is more practical than emotional.

The coaster is technically dead, the material it is made of is not biologically alive. On the other hand, I would argue that anything that serves a purpose is alive. This coaster is alive when it is holding a mug because it is protecting the surface under it from becoming damaged from the mug.

The coaster has a natural feel due to its material. Still, it feels cheap and mass-produced due to its weight, shape and practicality.

Although the history of coaster in general align with the concept of ‘form follows function’, I have little personal history with the object. Where and when it came from is unknown and in my opinion, irrelevant.

With its practical design and light wearability, the coaster can easily be owned and used for a very long time. It is other factors, such as trends, that will decide whether or not the object becomes discarded or forgotten.

This is a pair of winter slippers, size 38. It has a circle of white eva soles, which is about two centimeters thick. The green fabric on the top half covers the sole so that my feet can reach in, looking like a speedboat from the side. Its appearance is a felt fabric, and it feels like a fake lawn to the touch. The interior is gray coral fleece, and there is already a trace of my foot in it. I think its temperature is determined by the temperature of my feet, but at this moment, it is cold.
I wear it every day when I walk at home. I think it is just a pair of ordinary slippers for me. Although I often want to buy a pair of better-looking slippers, I don't know why it has not been successful. I think it is dead, but it keeps my traces, my feet, the places I walked, the dust I stepped on, so it records my life to a certain extent, it is half alive.
I think all of it comes from petroleum, belongs to a chemical substance, and is a product at the end of the industrial production chain.
I bought it in the live broadcast room only because the host’s propaganda ability is too strong. To put it bluntly, these slippers feel like stepping on shit, and they are very cheap, only 3 pounds. Its future is very clear. I will bring it to London and spend the next year with me at home in London. When I leave London, I think it will be left in the trash can in London.

The mug is cylindrical in its shape, and is hollow with one open side. A handle is present, designed for the placement of two fingers, either for carrying or clasping the object.
It is matt to the touch, with the porcelain half a centimetre thick to retain heat yet to not cause discomfort. The mug itself is blue and white, with dark brown coffee taking filling half its hollow space. The coffee is also seen in rims near the opening of the mug, and also faintly in drips around its outside. The mug was warm to the touch, however is now cold as the time has passed.

This object specifically does not hold much meaning. However this type of object is selected nearly every morning as a space for my coffee, therefore it does hold some importance to me. The history of the mug is not fully known, it is potentially a year old, but its origin is difficult to pinpoint. Its future however, is a lot more clear; the mug will be emptied, cleaned, placed back in the cupboard and potentially used again tomorrow by me or someone else.

The tape measure I have is a round plastic yellow tape measure with a diameter of four centimetres and a weight of 0.021kg. It‘s at room temperature (about 24°C) It can be easily carried in pocket and permits one to measure around curves or corners.
This tape measure uses plastic, which is derived from materials found in nature, such as natural gas, oil, coal, minerals and plants.

It is a product of stationery industry and can be used in building, fashion and many other industries.
The first record of people using a measuring device was by the Romans using marked strips of leather. Personally I bought it on Taobao.com with 6 yuan when I want to buy some cloth online.
It's a dead thing but it means safety to me because I can measure nearly everything with it when I want to know something’s length. I take it everyday and everywhere, even put my keys on it. I will use it for several years and replace it with a new one when it’s broken. It might be recycled and become the material for useful products in the future.

My object is a mug. It was made by ceramics or other chemical material, around 10cm high. It is white but not pure, because it was really cheap like those cheapest mugs in ikea and that you can imagine what the color looks like. The surface was printed with black bold types 「world‘s best boss」. It was ub-ambient temperature and can be warmer by hand.

It has a curved handle and hold a larger amount of fluid, which is really suitable and handy to pick up. It basically depends on four fingers going through the handle and holding it， the thumb doesn't seem necessary to work.

It mean a lot. I found it hard to buy when I first saw this cup, it was appeared in the first episode of the office season 1. I was totally fascinated by this sitcom since Jim put Michael's mug into a huge jelly. At that time I determined myself: I must have this mug. After searching it on the e-commerce and negotiating with those shop-owners, I finally had one. So you can tell it is significant to me.

Pencil ✏️

My silver German wooden pencil has been taken fresh out of its box couple weeks ago. It is still in its original size, long enough to comfortably hold but not too long enough to be used in three months with the amount I write. I could also describe the way it has been designed as to how a German(company) would develop their products, thoughtful, practical without compromising on design. Silver slick with black ribbed dots, which makes it a little more upscale for a pencil adding more comfort to for the human hand. I tend to find warmth in wooden objects, which I also find in this pencil. I also think it is warm comparing it to the literal and physical temperature of what a mechanical pencil could be at the moment.

The pencil is designed in a neutral manner that whoever and however picked up holds the power to use and drive it to their wish. It is designed to implement action.

My relationship with the pencil goes way back, even beyond from the very first time could learn how to write. I may not have looked at it in such a light until now describing it, but it is definitely one of the things that has taught me to scribble, write and be literate.

I would find the pencil to be very much dead, as it is a tool that is being sacrificed by its user until sharpened to it’s very last width. It’s relationship to nature would be harmful as commercially trees are cut down for its production and lead remains in the environment.

I don’t know the history of the object but I imagine the cave people using twigs and inks from natural sources as pigmentation, blood, coal etc. and the future of the object I think is getting redundant as the use of digital devices.

Socks for chairs

These are socks for chairs, and since chairs have four feet, these are also a pair of four. It's a texture similar to common socks. So it's soft and stretchy. The size and shape of these socks are just enough to wrap the AirPod Pro around. These objects are designed like Mickey Mouse, so they are black, red, white, and yellow.

The first thing I interacted with these objects was to stretch them with my hands and put them on a chair. And in normal interaction, I can feel these objects when I sit on a chair. When my body sits in a chair, my weight is delivered to the objects.

These are the items I bought while traveling in Japan a few years ago. The Mickey Mouse design captured me. This is because I like Mickey Mouse the most among many characters as I was born in 'the Year of the Rat' according to the Chinese zodiac. Actually, they're dead because they're manufactured. But Mickey Mouse design is always alive in my heart. Haha

They could have burned a lot of forests to be produced in factories. And, the chair industry has been able to trust this stuff and produce noisy chairs that scratch the bottom of the floor carelessly. However, with the advent of the chair socks, many industries and jobs must have been created.

These socks were produced at a factory, sold at a Japanese retailer, and were bought by a tourist. And they were kept in Korea, the tourist's country, and then they followed her to England as she went abroad to study. And they are warming the feet of chairs in a dormitory in London. They will keep the chair's feet warm, and if she moves away, they will follow. And eventually they'll be abandoned, burned.

The lipstick looks round and circle, which was made by plastic and metal. The shape of it its really thin, and the color present a light pink. This thing feels a bit cold, about 20°C.
When using this product, I can spin the lipstick out, with my hands. It can slowly melt away with my body heat. Furthermore, it can change color as my body temperature changes.
it’s a gift from my cousin, who live in New York, far away from me. I really miss her. I regard this lipstick as the only connection between she and me.
Unfortunately it’s absolutely dead. It’s made by some materials derived from nature, such as oil(mineral oil, castor oill, anum and paroline), wax(Beeswax, carnauba wax and beeswax), colorant(pigment, sometimes cochineal).
It is industrially produced. The production of a lipstick needs to go through a series of processes: preparation of raw materials, mixing, adding heat to fill, cooling the mold, opening the mold, take out the product, packaging, inspection of the product.

My everyday object is a scrunchie and I bought it at a local market a few years ago by the time they were becoming extremely popular again. Mine is the fabric covered elastic type and its common use is for a hair tie despite I also tend to warn them as an accessory. Its shape is defined depending on where I am wearing so its flexibility and adaptability gives to the object this special characterization of changeability. When rolling the scrunchie onto my long and curly hair the object itself fits as It was part of my body as well. Their blue and white lines widen or contract depending on where you take it or how many turns you make. This fact makes the object feel alive when I am using it and its commodity is presented as an extension of myself. I use it almost all the time, whether I am working or just walking around I wear it with me as part of my skin.

I have five keys in total, each of them is particular in its own way: as far as I just found out I have three primary keys (mostly used for internal doors) and two paracentric ones (external doors), these are kept together by three silver rings to which two keychains are attached.

The primary keys have a more classical, old shape with a nice smooth texture, their dimensions are about 6,5 cm x 2 cm; two of them are gold and one is silver, so their ‘visual’ temperature is hot for the gold ones and cold for the silver one.
The paracentric keys contrarily have a more actual, modern shape with a more complex texture, one is smaller (about 5 cm x 2 cm) then the other (about 6 cm x 2,5 cm). Their colour is silver and their ‘visual’ temperature is cold.
The real temperature of all the keys is generally cold, since they're made from metal.

—

All of them are designed to be hold from the top from the fingers, these are then used with a rotatory movement.

—

They don’t have a particular meaning but if I have to choose one I would definitely say that they mean ‘home’.

It is dead and they don’t have a particular relationship to nature. I don’t think they have a particular relationship to industry as well but it’s made from silver so is something produced industrially.

—

I don’t exactly know what is the history of my object but I’m sure they have a long one because they’re used to open the door of a rented house. They could have easily been lost, or forgotten somewhere since it is a must-have object, I’m sure they’ve been in a lot of places and been hold from a lot of different people.

As well as their history I cannot predict it but I hope I won’t lost them. For sure they will be owned by someone else in the future - hopefully not in the near future.

My object is a computer mouse. It has three buttons to control a selection on display with a smooth texture, and the shape fits the hand.
This object plays an integral part in my lives; I need to use it for design work every day. It has been used to controlling a computer system was in 1968. I am not sure about the future development of it due to the Screen-based media rising; maybe it will be replaced by the touchscreen item.

Hand cream

This hand cream very easy to handle. Most times a little colder than my temperature. Its paste is white, very easy to push away, showing matte texture, not sticky at all. Yeah, I don't like sticky hands. And it is fragrance free, which is important too. And it designed easy to open by one hand. It make me feel comfy because we have to wash hand many times and use hand sanitizer now. I think I rely on it much than before.

Although it is inanimate, it became a part of me when puts on my hands, or accompanies me for a while.

Its packaging is plastic, so it's not nature-friendly. I'm not sure if the paste is artificial or natural, maybe both. It was the first hand cream I bought after I came to London. I bought it after listening to others' recommendation and I liked its simple function. It may be discarded after a few months of use, but I will cherish the time with it. It will also remind me of this special time.

Thermos Flask

This is a thermos cup, the exterior is dark purple, the inside is the color of its material itself, it is very light and the size is very suitable as a water cup.
Its size is just right to hold it with one hand. It has a good seal and is convenient for me to carry it. Drinking water with it has some disadvantages. One is that the mouth of the bottle does not fit my mouth, and the other is that I don’t know the temperature of the water inside. As for often scalding myself.
It is a tool for me to help me drink water, and it is likely to be replaced by many other cups. It has no life, but an instrument.
His material is probably stainless steel, which belongs to an industrial product and has been mass-produced. Its origin history can be traced back to ancient times, probably from the birth of Western bacteriology. There is a scientific basis for drinking hot water. People have a demand for hot water, and the thermos cup appeared.
In my opinion, his future may change in form, but the most basic function will not disappear. It may be closer to ergonomics and more convenient for people to use, but it is all based on "form follows function".
