Demeter made the crops grow each year. All those fresh bread made from the harvest was given to her. She was the goddess of the earth, of agriculture, and of fertility in general.
Her daughter Persephone became the wife of Hades, and Demeter searched for her really hard, and she's really sad, The seasons stoped and living things stopped growing and died. But Zeus had to come in and send Hermes to the underworld and brought Persephone back and bring back all life on Earth.
