gender to me as a demigirl

Personally, my gender identity has been pretty straightforward. I identify as mostly woman but there are times where I'm just me, not any specific gender. The session yesterday has helped me learn the term for this being demi-girl which I appreciate. On my own and around others it has never been a huge issue for me as I typically don't care to think about it. There were times where I was mistaken as a boy in my childhood, this used to upset me a lot and lead to a lot of my insecurities that I'm just recently correcting.

As a black women, there are many benefits (and downsides) of having these two traits coexist. It has taken me a while to love my hair, and I now realize that my beautiful coils are beautiful. I am still learning to love every part of my body, however I am grateful for the journey I am in. Being a women in a male-dominating country, it is sometimes hard to be seen. However, the feeling when i prove others wrong is euphoric. I have always thought I knew my gender as a cisgender woman, however I sometimes question my sexuality. Overall, I LOVE BEING A WOMAN!!!

As a young woman I have definitely experienced a lot of misogyny, and I find that people underestimate me A LOT. My gender identity is a little...uh....hazy at the moment, but as someone who uses she/her pronouns I know that I'm privileged enough to not be misgendered while moving through my daily life. I often wonder what it would be like and how differently I would be treated if I wasn't a woman, but I tend to not let those thoughts run too wild. Not only do I have a lot of overlapping identifiers, but they tend to compound in both beautiful and unfortunate ways. For example, my blackness combined with my gender makes me a part of the most oppressed group in America. Furthermore, my gender combined with the limitations on my ability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity have created a web of problems that can be extremely difficult to navigate as a teenager. However, this overlap also gives me unique perspective as I move through the world, and I love how unique that makes me. I do struggle with mental illness as well, so all of these identifiers (including gender) make it a bit harder, but who needs sarah tonin anyways

Being a woman has truly been a fantastic experience for me despite the hardships that come along with being a woman in addition to being black. I embody it through being careless and blocking out others' opinions. as a black woman, I'm always being told I can't wear this or can't say that or can't achieve something. I break barriers people doubt I could over and over again. Although I feel silenced a lot at my PWI I do not remain silent even when expected to. When I went to a co-ed school I felt even more pressured to stay silent don't speak over the men and don't speak over the white people. I embrace being a woman of color every chance I get.

Learning about gender and its intrinsically socially-constructed nature has allowed me to fully embrace the fluidity and ambiguity of my gender identity. My gender is so incredibly fluid: it has no permanent association at all. As a female, I highly identify with feminine issues, but I don't exactly feel inclined to identify as fully female. I have no distinct gender; I just am. Gender itself irrelevant to my own identity, but on a collective level it is still important to me (ex. supporting the rights of trans people, feminism and the support of women, etc.) I still highly identify with majority-feminine issues like objectification, sexual violence, and anti-misogyny. Being sapphic also influences my identity and that correlates with my gender identity as well. I am overall just queer. I have come out as queer to my family, but not genderqueer. My friends are aware of my rejection of gender as a concept :)

It's been a weirdly nebulous subject that I don't always feel comfortable addressing (that internalized type beat) but I've been thinking about more during SDLC.

Ima be honest, my nonbinary friends stole my gender over the summer. I never had any issue with my gender until they made me realise that there was another option. I then discovered that I was genderqueer. My gender changes within and without the binary in ways no other gender, especially the "girl" gender, can encapture. So, I'm openly genderqueer at school, but in my non accepting home I'm still a girl. I also still subscribe my identity with black girl because that is my experience in life. So in short, intersectionality goes hand in hand with gender and beware of non-gender-conforming friends who will steal your gender.

Gender Identity with my Family

As the eldest daughter in a single-parent household, I feel a lot of pressure to be the "perfect" daughter and then a lot of guilt when I fail to meet this high standard. I should be helping my brother with his math homework, I should be dropping everything to wash the dishes and scrub the floors and do the laundry. Also, as a girl, exploring my sexuality is very taboo. My mom often tells me that I'm selfish and "it's all about your own pleasure" Navigating dating and a new world of romantic relationships is very tricky, I don't have a stable father figure in my life and so I feel like I need to be very cautious on who I trust with my heart, but I don't give myself grace if I make a mistake.

I constantly get misgendered because of my outwardly feminine traits. I also get catcalled alot because of it. Shout out to that old dude that was staring at my butt at the mall, as well as the judgement white mom, and the guy that followed me in his car last night.
