The gates symbolize freedom. "Gates are our ONLY way out of here. They take us home."(Matson 94). Once you get on the island you are stuck there until you find a gate that takes you home. Only one person at a time can go through a gate. It is the one and  only way they can get home and be free.

The second symbol is the flower necklaces. Each time a newcomer arrive on the island they receive a flower necklace that someone places around their neck. "Thad placed the flowers around my neck, brushing my hair behind my ear."(Matson). The flower necklaces symbolize hope. A hope that they will make it home. Flowers do not stay alive forever. Soon the flowers that they are wearing around their neck will turn brown and die. They hope that the flowers stay alive long enough for them to catch a gate and leave. If someone's flowers die around their neck, then they are most likely going to die because gates only come every once in a while.

The images below are pictures of a flower and a picture of a portal. On the island of NIL, they call the portals "gates." They say the portal spins very fast and "feels like your whole body is burning when you go through it."(Matson 112). The background of the portal is black because in the dark you can't see anything and from what they know, they don't know exactly where they are going, so its almost like they can't see or are blinded to where their destination is. The flower is pink because Charley's flower necklace was pink when she got it. She says she, "saw Thad walking towards me with something pink sticking out between his fingers."(Matson 99).

There are a lot of important components in the book NIL. The first one is the gates because they are the only way home on the island. Time falls into the same category as the gates because each person only has 365 days. Agility also relates to time and the gates because in order to catch a gate you have to be able to run fast and then jump up into it. Stone knives are the most important weapon that they have in The Shack and that is why they are number four. They only have four of them and the most durable, useful weapon in The City. The City is the home of all the characters in the book except those who choose to leave. It is the safest place on the island because someone is constantly keeping watch all day, every day. The Cove is a big pond with a waterfall flowing into it. It is where they retrieve their water, take baths, and clean their clothes. The Wall is where everyone who has ever been on the island of NIL carved their name. Everyone either has a cross or a check mark. A cross meaning that the person has died on the island and a check mark meaning that they caught a gate and went home. They get most of their food from coconuts and also use the fishing nets to catch fish for dinner.
For the list I chose an urgent sign. This sign is in the shape of a pyramid because it correlates with the list. The gates being at the top of the pyramid to the fishing nets being a the bottom. It can be called a Priority Pyramid because it goes from the highest priorities to the lowest. It also has an exclamation mark because the items on the list are very important to everyone living on the island.
