It provides the accountability for the students - yes, there is a computer at home. Technology isn't the "future" anymore, it's the present and we aren't even there. Is there a replacement plan that everyone knows about?

Do we have enough internet to support this? It sounds good, but you need to teach a good balance to teachers. Do we have a budget for replacement and repairs?

I don't necessarily have strong opinions on this topic because I don't have experience with it. I would think that professional development would be key. The quality of the equipment matters too. If students don't like using their devices (because maybe they're too small and uncomfortable and you can't two-finger scroll) they won't be inclined to use them at home. I'm interested in learning more about using one-to-one.

My significant other worked in IT in a school where all students in all grades were 1:1 with iPads. He noted that students did appear more engaged, especially in classes where the technology was implemented in a significant way (more than just notetaking). The district used a whitelisting system, which took a lot of work on the behalf of the district, but students were still able to access restricted sites (with some ease). Therefore, the possibility of misuse in our school would still be an issue.

Additionally, kids broke their devices often and the district lost a lot of money in that respect--even having the students' family pay $50 for a replacement.

This would obviously create a lot of opportunities for engaging students. However, some people may feel pressured to use the technology every day or all of the time. This may result in bad tech use. I 'm also not a fan of "paperless." A hybrid model would be fine, but a truly "paperless" classroom is not something that I would want.

It has been very beneficial having access to student laptops in the classroom that do not have to be shared with another teacher. However, there are not always enough for everyone to have one (during some class periods with more than 5 students). Having access to more laptops in the classroom would helpful. I have several students that do not have Wi-Fi access at home.

Many students do not have internet access at home and an increasing amount of classwork and homework is expected to be completed online. This is already causing problems as alternative assignments are not always provided to those students without access. Having a device would be beneficial, but then there would likely be an even higher expectation to access information online.

Students and staff will need to be trained on how to fully utilize devices. Devices will quickly become obsolete. I would love to use a device daily, however am concerned about all of the working parts. What about each room having designated classroom set of computers?

As an educator and taxpayer, I do not think going 1:1 is beneficial. I would not use it in my classroom enough to justify going 1:1, and as a taxpayer, I do not see a significant enough of an educational value to justify the cost of going 1:1. Students who don't have access to a computer at home will probably also not have access to WiFi, so having their own device will not benefit them. I am very satisfied with the current system of having an up-to-date cart that can be shared by 2-3 teachers. I think it's possible that by going 1:1 the expectation will become that computers must be used in every class. I think it's possible that the rigor and benefits of good teaching by using best practices could be lost by forcing the use of technology where it doesn't need to be used.

At this time, I do not think going 1:1 would be a huge benefit over the resources that we have now. Students have limited internet access at home. During the school day, the wifi isn't always working the greatest. I can't imagine how "bombarded" the wifi network will be if every student was on the wifi at the same time. There are already lots of issues with connectivity. How are we, as a district, going to handle replacements and repairs of the laptops? I'm sure it will be a daily occurrence that laptops will need to be fixed/replaced for students. There always seems to be 1-2 laptops that have issues in the carts that we share between 2-3 teachers.
Also, with the subject I teach, I would not want my desktop computer replaced with a laptop. I do a lot of work with equations, graphs, etc. A desktop is much easier to create documents and materials of this nature. My desktop is fairly new and has a large screen. It's easier for me to work with the keyboard and larger screen size than a mouse pad on a laptop. Why get rid of desktops that are fairly new? Plus, they are a bit cheaper than laptops also!

I want to go 1:1- I am looking foward to students having more access to technology and for them to learn to be responsible for their own device. Ideally, my students would have a laptop instead of a chromebook or a tablet. Because I teach science, I would really like to continue to have the ability to use excel over G-sheets (excel does more of what I need for my students). However, I will use whatever we have and make the most of it! I wonder about the transition and I think I will need some time (planning) to incorporate new technology into my lessons. As a Red Lion resident I am tired of my school always being looked down on by the other districts and I wish we would not be so stubborn about change and innovation! V. Stone

"Technology is a resource and how that technology is embraced and utilized by the students and teachers is the ultimate variable of success." (Quote taken from Edutopia, What the Research Says about 1:1) If going to 1:1 helps place some of the responsibility for learning and resource utilization back into the hands of the students, then I am all for it. Otherwise, I can make due with a class set of laptops and allowing use of personal devices for more mature classes. I do currently have to give many paper copies of online assignments to students who either do not have home internet or don't like to do work digitally. I foresee that continuing despite an increase in technology availability. As for equipment preferences, the tasks that I have my students do are difficult to accomplish with ipads or Chromebooks. Laptops with and some temporary storage for file manipulation tends to be the best. My own children attend a district that has been doing 1:1 and I am very pleased with the integration of the equipment into their classes from a parent's point of view. They get HP or Lenovo laptops running LINUX starting in 7th grade and keep them until Sr. year when they can purchase them for $75. Sr. High students are trained to be the helpdesk for any issues.

Many students are so inundated with computer technology outside of the classroom that I fear adding more of it is not necessarily good for their physical, social and thinking skills. Look no further than how the use of the calculator, though good in some cases, has impaired students basic understanding of numbers. In addition, the added operating & maintenance costs plus the intangible costs such as time lost in the classroom from using technology (looking for the remote to turn this off/on, trying to figure out why something won't work, etc) can't be good. As you can see, I have my doubts.

Honestly when I need students to access the internet, I plan ahead and use the cart. Otherwise a connected device like a phone or tablet is fine to research or access a site. I do not need students to be 1:1 and think the implementation and the cost would outweigh the benefits in class. Already I think we as teachers use technology just to say we are using technology too much. The use of technology needs to evaluated the same as a new activity in a classroom - did it meet the desired goal? Were students engaged? Did it help enrich or push them to reach a standard? Too often we just throw technology into a lesson to prove it was used. Overall my biggest concern is will the wifi handle the extra devices? Who pays if a device is lost or broken? If I had to choose a device, I would say a laptop or iPad - not a chromebook.
