It shines because it reflects light from the Sun. The Sun’s light hits the Moon and bounces back to Earth, so we can see the Moon glowing in the sky.</p><p>It takes the Moon about 27 days to go all the way around the Earth once. This is called a sidereal month. But because Earth is also moving around the Sun, it takes about 29 and a half days for the Moon to go through all its phases (like full moon to full moon). This is called a synodic month.</p><p>Sometimes, the Earth gets between the Sun and the Moon and casts a shadow on the Moon. Instead, it shines because it <strong>reflects sunlight</strong>. You can think of the Moon like a big mirror in space. When sunlight hits the Moon’s surface, which is covered with dust and rocks, some of the light bounces back to Earth. That is why we can see the Moon shining in the sky at night. The Moon’s surface is rough and dusty, so it only reflects about 12 out of every 100 rays of sunlight. Because of this, the Moon looks much less bright than the Sun, even though it seems very bright at night. Depending on how much sunlight is shining on the Moon and where the Moon is in the sky, it can look very bright or a little faint.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>How Long Does the Moon Take to Orbit Earth?</mark></strong></p><p>The Moon moves around Earth in a path called an <strong>orbit</strong>. Instead, the Moon shines because it <strong>reflects sunlight</strong>. Think of the Moon as a huge mirror floating in space. When sunlight hits the Moon’s dusty and rocky surface, some of that light bounces off and travels all the way to Earth, which is why we can see the Moon glowing. The Moon’s surface is rough and covered with dust, so it doesn’t reflect all the sunlight it gets. In fact, it only reflects about 12% of the sunlight, which makes it look less bright than the Sun. Depending on how much sunlight is reflected and where the Moon is in its orbit, the Moon can look very bright or very faint to us here on Earth.</p><p><br></p><p><strong><mark>How Long Does the Moon Take to Orbit Earth?</mark></strong></p><p>The Moon moves around Earth in a path called an <strong>orbit</strong>. This is why the cycle of the Moon’s phases takes nearly 30 days to complete.</p><p>Why Does the Moon Change Shape?</p><p>As the Moon travels around Earth, the sunlight lights up different parts of the Moon’s surface that we can see from Earth. This makes the Moon look like it is changing shape, but really it is just the changing view of the lit-up part of the Moon. These changing shapes are called the <strong>phases of the Moon</strong>. The phases start with the new moon, when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun and the side facing us is dark, so we can’t see it. Then the Moon becomes a thin crescent shape as a small part of the sunlit side is visible. Over the next days, the crescent grows bigger into a half-moon, called the first quarter. Then it grows even more into a shape called a gibbous until the whole face is lit up during the full moon. After the full moon, the lit part of the Moon shrinks again, going back through the gibbous, half-moon, and crescent phases until it becomes dark again at the new moon.</p><p>What Makes the Moon Important to Earth?</p><p>The Moon is very important to Earth in many ways. One of the biggest effects the Moon has is on the ocean tides. The Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth, especially on the water in the oceans. This pull causes the water to rise and fall in a pattern we call high tides and low tides. These tides happen every day and affect marine life and the weather along coastlines. Also, the Moon helps to keep Earth’s axis stable, which keeps our seasons regular. Without the Moon’s pull, Earth might wobble more on its axis, which would make the seasons change a lot and could make life harder for plants and animals. The Moon also slows down the Earth’s spin very slowly over millions of years, which means our days get longer but only by tiny amounts each year.</p><p><br></p><p><strong><mark>More Fun Facts About the Moon</mark></strong></p><p>The Moon is about 384,400 kilometers (or 238,855 miles) away from Earth—that’s really far! Even though it seems close when we look up, it would take astronauts a few days to travel there in a spaceship. The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth by about 3.8 centimeters (1.5 inches) every year. This means that millions of years ago, the Moon was much closer to Earth than it is today. The Moon has no air, no water, and no life, so it is very quiet and empty. People first landed on the Moon in 1969 during the famous Apollo 11 mission when Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk there. The side of the Moon we see from Earth is called the near side, and the other side is called the far side, which we can never see from Earth because the Moon always shows the same face to us.</p><p><br></p><p><strong><mark>How Do Scientists Study the Moon?</mark></strong></p><p>Scientists learn about the Moon by using powerful telescopes and by sending spacecraft to fly close or even land on the Moon’s surface. By studying the Moon, scientists understand more about how the Moon was formed and how the Earth and the rest of the solar system began billions of years ago.
