APD works with local communities and private providers to support people who have developmental disabilities and their families in living, learning, and working in their communities. APD also provides assistance in identifying the needs of people with developmental disabilities for supports and services so they can reach their full potential.

The agency also works to educate the public on disability issues and focuses attention on employment for people with disabilities.

What disabilities does APD serve?

In order to be eligible for services from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (“APD”), an individual must have a developmental disability (as defined in section 393.063(12), Florida Statutes), which occurs prior to age 18 and constitutes a substantial handicap that can reasonably be expected to continue indefinitely. Disabilities served by APD include:

• Intellectual disabilities (Full Scale IQ of 70 or below)

• Severe forms of autism

• Spina bifida cystica or myelomeningocele

• Cerebral palsy

• Prader-Willi syndrome

• Down syndrome

• Phelan-McDermid syndrome or

• Individuals between the ages of 3-5 at high risk for a developmental disability

How to use Monroe County Transit (MCT) 

MCT drivers are well-trained professionals, with special expertise in defensive driving, wheelchair restraints, passenger handling, vehicle use, safety, special needs, and sensitivity-awareness. All buses are wheelchair accessible. MCT is a Medicaid provider.

OAR’s A Guide to Safety was written with help from parents, first responders, educators, and community members, who shared their strategies and resources to address safety threats that commonly arise during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This resource helps educate parents, caregivers, educators, first responders, and other community members about how to prevent and mitigate emergency events, safety threats that may affect their child in the future, and how to teach safety habits that will build a foundation for safety in adulthood.

The Autism Society of Florida provides training to swim instructors on how to teach kids and adults with autism to swim, advocates legislatively for drowning prevention initiatives, and provides grants to programs that support people with autism. 

It is important for the safety plan to cover all areas of the person with autism's life including home, school, and any community activities. Inform all teachers, caregivers, and trusted community members about the safety plan. Many families share the forms with their local first responders.

The Residential Program consists of seven group homes located throughout Palm Beach County which are professionally staffed 24 hours a day. We help adults 18 years or older learn to live on their own by acquiring new skills that enhance their quality of life, while assisting them in achieving their highest level of independence.

What our program offers: Each resident has a personalized plan that identifies measurable, attainable goals, as well as strategies for achieving them. During the day, every resident participates in meaningful activities ranging from day programs to employment. Our six beautiful 4,000 sq. ft. group homes are designed to provide a safe home-like environment for up to 30 children who need a safe place to live on either a temporary or permanent basis. Each child has their own bedroom and bathroom for privacy and dignity, they go to local schools and participate in sports, dance or after-school activities of their choice.
