Closeness is defined as two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination. The listener always has a secure, jacketed feeling. Sometimes, when two musicians are super close with one another, the band actually becomes capable of moving beyond "normal" limits. Their connection becomes the energy for the band, and other members feed off of that. A good example from the book is "One Down, One Up", by the John Coltrane Quartet. It starts off with the pianist and Elvin Jones. Eventually, the bassist joins in, and several minutes later, the pianist drops out, leaving it to Coltrane and Jones by themselves for several minutes. Another example of closeness is that of Hall & Oates, a well known duo. In all of their songs, you can sense how close they are. They work so well together, and all of the other members of their band benefit from that. A good example of this is one of their hit songs "Maneater". During almost all of the song, it is just the two of them singing, but towards the end there is a saxophone solo, which is super impressive, but then it backs out and the duo finishes the song out.
