The economy in the viking age was based upon agriculture. But because of the expand of viking societies and the harsh climate in scandinavia, good farming land was hard to find, so they also used trading as a method of getting necessary supplies.

The viking traded items such as timber, bags, smoked fish, amber and fur. They also traded slaves for items. In return the vikings got items such as wheat, iron, silverware, wine and spices. At first, goods were traded for other goods at an equal value, but later they started paying for items with gold coins. The towns the vikings later colonised became busy centres of trade. This included York (England) and Dublin (Ireland)

Slaves were some of the most important trade “item”. People could become slaves if they did crimes such as murderer and then the person could become the victims slave. The slaves were people without any personal rights. They were treated as a domestic animal and also lived with the domestic animals. If the slaves didn't behave they would get beaten. The slave bodies were also available for sexual exploitation.

They result of trading lead to a economic development, urban market, larger estates, international trading pot. This lead to a growth of local power and establishment of the early Scandinavian states. They viking cities needed protection from invaders and pirates, because they had such a good economy.. Therefore more king came to protect them…

Sine-Sofie
Not only were the Viking warriors, they were also farmers and craftspeople. Farming was actually their primary occupation, and the individual family helped each other with running the farm.

The Viking craftspeople were divided into two groups; the less skilled people and the skilled people. The less skilled people produced farming tools, while the skilled people specialized in making weapons and swords.
Metalworkers also made armour, such as helmets, which were worn by Viking warrior chieftains or wealthy jarls.

Heba:
It was definitely a benefit to be wealthy since the wealthier were provided with better armour than the poorer. For example, the less wealthy and the ones with less importance wore leather caps, hats with fur, leather jackets, padded jackets, bronze or pewter jewellery.
While the wealthier with more importance wore silver bracelets, silver helmets in general just gold and silver.

Not only did they make weapons for battle but metalworkers did also make armour such as helmets that Viking warrior chieftains or wealthy jarls wore

Frederikke:
Viking craftspeople made luxury items such as fine jewellery. The jewellery was another way in which Vikings expressed their social status and wealth.

Vikings were also skilled carpenters and shipbuilders

Its design shows evidence of the great skill of Viking shipbuilders. Ships like these enabled the Vikings to travel distances over the seas and discover foreign lands. Their encounters with other cultures also helped them to become skilled traders, exchanging many of their own well-made goods
