For essays or non fiction you need a topic and thesis, or some kind of statement. It's either proving something, persuading, or providing information. Fictional is kind of different for everyone and doesn't have rules because with fiction rules limits your creativity.

Well for essays you need a hook, thesis, body paragraphs, and a closing paragraph. When writing for yourself, or just not in an essay format, I feel everyone has their own style. There aren't any specific rules (besides that of grammar), and you can just experiment with it.

Have your ideas clear. You need an intro to introduce a topic and the thesis. You need to have the next paragraphs (body paragraphs) support that thesis. In between those paragraphs you will have transitions so the writing flows smoothly. The last paragraph always restates the thesis and concludes the paper.

*It's trial and error, and you won't find your writing style on the first try as it takes hundreds of pages to perfect.
*You might need to cut out parts you're especially proud of, and expand ones that you aren't.

Sometimes it's easy to write, other times your brain is dead.
For fiction, there is generally a beginning, middle, and end.
There will be a lot of drafts.
You start with an idea.
Get other people to critique your work.
I start with a vomit draft.
Your first draft is NOT the best one.
The process differs for nonfiction and fiction and poetry pieces.
You will hate yourself.
All of your characters will have a piece of you in them.
Please don't type in Arial.

There is no catch-all process for everyone, the process differs from person to person. Generally, you research a topic, find sources then start to outline your paragraphs and sections by specific topics, then fill in with explanations and full thoughts.

Everybody can write about something, because writing is just simply turning what your mind is thinking about onto paper, The trick is knowing how. If you've even had a deep, in thought conversation or argument that you've had in your head, the ones that you never will have in person, comes from the same place creativity comes from. That argument or conversation you will never have? That was fiction.
