Jealousy is the dominant theme in Act Three. Othello’s jealousy begins to grow as Iago manipulates him into believing that Desdemona is unfaithful. Iago’s insinuations about Cassio’s relationship with Desdemona fuel Othello’s inner turmoil, and he becomes consumed by doubt and suspicion. The theme of jealousy is symbolized by the handkerchief, a small object that becomes a powerful catalyst for Othello’s growing mistrust.

Iago’s deceitful nature comes fully into play in Act Three as he expertly manipulates those around him. His skill at lying and twisting the truth becomes more apparent as he deceives Othello by planting seeds of doubt while pretending to be loyal. Iago manipulates the actions of all, including his wife Emilia who steals Desdemona’s handkerchief due to Iago's bidding. Iago's deception drives the tragic events of the play.

The love Othello has for Desdemona begins to unravel in Act Three. The passionate love Othello once had for his wife turns into a toxic and destructive force as jealousy corrodes Othello’s feelings. This theme highlights how easily love can be tainted by mistrust and manipulation, or how easily mistrust can destroy a relationship.

Reputation is significant in Act Three, particularly for Othello and Cassio. Cassio laments the loss of his honor after being dismissed, and Othello is deeply concerned with his own standing and the sanctity of his marriage. Iago plays on these concerns, suggesting that Desdemona’s infidelity not only damages Othello’s emotional state but also his reputation as a leader.

Othello’s trust in Iago leads him to betray his trust in Desdemona. Characters place their faith in the wrong people: Othello trusts Iago instead of Desdemona, and Desdemona trusts that Othello will listen to her. This breakdown of trust results in the play's tragic trajectory.
