We encourage individual styles within our operational structure. Therapy is an art, and the road to healing is a unique process for each individual.

Through our Helpline, we serve thousands of individuals from across the state each year. We listen to our client's story and we translate their personal experience into a legal problem to be solved. Sometimes that means challenging a decision to deny or stop Medicaid benefits. We also challenge Medicaid plans when they reduce or deny services.

Taking what we learn from individual cases, we advocate for large-scale policy changes that help others across the state. We also build capacity among consumers, providers, and other advocates by getting out in the community to provide education and training.  Using the law and advocacy, we ensure that Pennsylvanians meet their most basic needs and have a pathway to opportunity.

 We provide financial assistance for essential medical needs that families might otherwise be unable to afford—such as surgeries, prescriptions, medical equipment, and travel costs related to care. By covering these critical expenses, we ensure that children receive timely, necessary treatment that can improve their health and quality of life.

We work to ease the burden on families and make healthcare more accessible—so kids can focus on being kids, not patients.

The program helps cover the cost of dental treatment and anesthesia costs,
whether done in a hospital setting or dental office. We do not cover the hospital costs.

The only motive behind this site is to help the less fortunate in our community and absolutely no tax benefit is received for the Wishes fulfilled.

Besides offering these therapies, we conduct scientific studies of complementary therapies at the highest clinical standard. Our goal is nothing less than a complete change in how these wonderful therapies are viewed by, and integrated into, our medical system and insurance industry.

Something that really bothers me is that we have no playgrounds in Adams County that are both wheelchair friendly/accessible or sensory friends. I’m in Gettysburg. We have a fenced in dog park, but no enclosed fenced in area for our autist kiddos that elope. I’ve spoke with so many families asking if there is funding for a fence for their home because their child never gets to play outside because they will run off…which is terrifying as a parent or caregiver! Our community needs to support individuals of ALL abilities so that they can enjoy the same things as everyone else! I should have been able to take my daughter who was non-ambulatory and used a wheelchair to the park to swing and play, but she was not able to do any of that because it wasn’t available to her or other like her. I’m just a mom, but I would love to one day present this to Adams County and push to provide an ALL abilities playground! This was a quick design I came up with, but we need something with the foam ground so that wheelchairs can roll across with ease (grass and gravel are not ideal for wheelchairs!) and if the playground could be surrounded by tall fencing so that parents of autistic kids or any kid who likes to elope have a place where they can go, sit down, relax and watch their child run and play without the fear of them running into a road. And how amazing would it be for all these parents and caregivers of the special needs community to have a safe place to meet other families and have a safe place to have play dates. If anyone else is up to try to make this happen for Gettysburg, reach out to me! I have no clue where to start but I have a vision and I think with a lot of voices…we can make this happen!

Most people who qualify for Medicaid will use HealthChoices to access physical healthcare, like annual checkups, care when you’re sick, or appointments to manage other illnesses or health needs. Meet Asher Moe, a 9-year-old little boy from Gettysburg Pennsylvania who has been diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. His cancer originated from the pancreas and is very aggressive. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Asher will require ongoing medical treatment over the next 1.5 year to 2 years, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy.

Before his diagnosis Asher was a very healthy and active child who enjoyed activities such as riding his bike, playing basketball. He is a huge fan of exotic cars. Some of his favorites are Toyota Supra mk5 & mk4 ,Nissan GTR R35 (or R34), Lamborghini, McLaren, Bugatti, Tesla Roaster, and Koenigsegg.

Amenities: There are three pools, one baby pool and three waterslides for you to enjoy. The pool has a few large grass covered areas for relaxing. Our bath house, admissions gate and snack bar are located at the entrance to the pool next to our mostly shaded parking lot.

Pool Admission Rates: Daily admissions are $17/person. If you think you may come more than a few times, then you should check out our 10 admission Value Pack for $120.

Hours of Operation: The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend with interruptions when school is in session. We open at noon for daily admission and at 11am for our members. Check our calendar for detailed information.

Snack Bar: Our Snack Bar is open daily until 6pm, attendance and weather permitting. Our hot food menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and chicken strips. We serve fountain beverages from Coca Cola as well as sports drinks, lemonade and juice bottles. For your sweet tooth, we have Hershey’s Ice Cream and an assortment of candy.

Through these Adventures, families can take a break from doctor visits and hospital stays and enjoy quality time together. Enrollment is open to families with children under 20 years of age whose diagnosis is deemed life-threatening by a medical professional.

The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, Inc. (OI Foundation) is the only voluntary national health organization dedicated to supporting people with osteogenesis imperfecta and their families. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people affected by OI through research, education, awareness, and mutual support. The OI Foundation began in 1970 by a small group of parents. At that time, they banded together to stimulate public and professional interest, support families and encourage research. Today, many of the people who serve on the Board of Directorsand oversee the Foundation’s operations have OI themselves or are parents of children with OI.

Research

Since 1970, the OI Foundation’s funding for research has doubled every five years, for a total investment of more than $3.3 million. Funding is available for postdoctoral fellowships to encourage new investigators to begin a career in OI research, and seed grants for preliminary research. All applications are reviewed by the Foundation’s Scientific Review Committee, which includes many preeminent OI researchers and clinicians. Funding also supports the OI Registry and the Linked Clinical Research Centers. Funded research increases potential for advances in gene therapy, a new diagnostic test and drug therapies under study.

Education

The Foundation’s principal education event is the OIF National Conference, which provides more than 570 people with medical, research, and coping information. For many, it’s the first opportunity to meet others who are living with OI. In addition, the Foundation is continually developing new information resources in response to the needs of families, individuals, and professionals working with those affected by OI. Topics covered include schooling, pain management, psychosocial needs of the family, child abuse, fracture management, and osteoporosis.

Awareness

The Foundation strives to build public awareness and generate additional support among individuals, community organizations, public agencies, and medical professionals. Up-to-date information on OI- from medical issues to daily living strategies- is available via phone, Internet, fax, and mail. The Foundation also reaches out with print publications, press releases, DVDs, and the website.

Mutual Support

Improving quality of life is a continuing challenge that our small group of staff and enormous army of volunteerswork constantly to achieve. From  support and network groups to expanding resources or raising funds, the OI community and Foundation staff provide quality support services to OI community members.

York Area Down Syndrome Association (YADSA) is a non-profit organization that provides support to families with children and adults with disabilities with a primary focus on individuals with Down Syndrome.

Our program supports individuals with Down syndrome, their families and healthcare teams by providing education, healthcare collaboration and a comprehensive review of the developmental, behavioral, educational, psychosocial and medical issues common in individuals with Down syndrome. Whether your family has received a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome or your child was diagnosed after birth, we can help you navigate any health challenges your child faces, answer your questions and offer coordinated care to meet your child’s unique needs.

Congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 to

confer broad protections on individuals with disabilities in the areas of

employment, state and local government services, and public

narrowly construed the term “disability” under the ADA, effectively

excluding many people who should have been covered from the Act’s

Removeable medical equipment is available for all MA recipients.

• However, the plaintiff class for B.B. v. Miller is limited to children under the

age of 21 who have mobility impairments.

The retroactive date for coverage of the equipment is April 1, 2020.

• However, class members who were denied coverage on or after July 1,

2017 may submit a renewed request for the equipment.

What is Covered

Wheelchair lifts, stair glides, ceiling lifts, metal accessibility ramps and other items

that are used by a beneficiary with a mobility impairment to enter and exit the

home or to support activities of daily living; and are removeable or reusable

without damage to the item.

Coverage includes installation. Installation of the medical equipment and

appliances includes, but is not limited to:

a. Parts or supplies provided or recommended by the manufacturer for

attaching or mounting the item to the surface at the home or residence;

b. Labor to attach or mount the item to a surface per the manufacturer’s

installation guide;

c. Required permits;

and children, including individuals with disabilities, who meet income and

other eligibility rules. In Pennsylvania, Medical Assistance physical health

benefits are delivered through ACCESS Plus (primary care case

management), managed care health plans (HealthChoices and voluntary

managed care), and ACCESS (fee for service). This publication explains how

to get assistive technology through ACCESS Plus, including the prior

authorization process.

Assistive technology includes both devices and services that help a person

with a disability to live more independently. Examples of devices are manual

wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, augmentative communication devices,

standers, hearing aids, canes, walkers, and other durable medical

equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and medical supplies. Examples of

services are an evaluation, maintenance, repairs, and training on the use of a

device. Many – but not all – forms of assistive technology are covered by

Medical Assistance, including ACCESS Plus.

Medical Assistance (Medicaid) is government-funded health insurance for

low-income children and adults, including many persons with disabilities.

Medicaid includes ACCESS, ACCESS Plus, and Medical Assistance

managed care health plans (HealthChoices and voluntary managed care).

Medical Assistance pays for durable medical equipment, such as motorized

and manual wheelchairs, walkers, standing devices, and patient lifts.

Medical Assistance also pays for most repairs or replacement parts even if

you did not use Medical Assistance to buy the equipment.

Like all other Medical Assistance providers, a durable medical equipment

(DME) or other medical supply provider that is enrolled in Medical

Assistance can only ask you to pay the Medical Assistance copayment

(usually not more than $6), if any is due. Also, the provider is not allowed

to charge supplementary payments—like delivery fees, service charges

such as charges for a home visit to pick up or repair equipment or

advanced payments/deposits. Also, the provider can bill you only if the

provider informed you ahead of time that Medical Assistance would not pay

for the service.

Domestic Violence: MidPenn attorneys provide legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault/intimidation. All survivors seeking relief under the PFA/PSVI Acts consult with a staff attorney who advises and explains legal options and their various ramifications as well as the need for safety planning. We provide representation in the Court of Common Pleas in order to obtain a Protection from Abuse Order or a Protection from Sexual Assault/Intimidation Order. 

Employment Law Project: MidPenn's Employment Law Project assist individuals in overcoming barriers to employment, obtaining unemployment compensation, preserving their existing jobs, and clearing up criminal records through expungements, sealing records and pardons so that they can gain employment. 

Low Income Taxpayer Clinic: MidPenn's Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) provides free legal advice and representation to low-income taxpayers and taxpayers who speak English as a second language in disputes with the Internal Revenue Service. The types of handled cases include: Innocent Spouse Relief, Injured Spouse Claims, Audits, Deficiency Notices, Earned Income Tax Credit Appeals, Identity Theft, Liens and Levies, and Employee/Independent Contract Disputes. The LITC also conducts educational programs on tax issues to social service agencies and Latino outreach organizations. Call 1-844-MPLS-TAX (844-675-7829) to contact the LITC. 

Public Benefits Projects:  MidPenn assists low-income individuals in matters involving public benefit programs so that they can provide for themselves and their families.  MidPenn provides free representation in cases involving Unemployment Compensation, Medical Assistance, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (Food Stamps), Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Women Infants and Children (WIC).

SAFE (Safeguarding vulnerable populations Against Financial Exploitation): MidPenn’s project attorney provides legal representation, conducts education and outreach across our service area for low-income elderly and disabled individuals about Power Of Attorneys (POA). A POA is one of the most important documents a senior citizen or disabled person can have prepared to protect their financial wellbeing. This project is funded by a grant from the Interest on Lawyer Trust Account Board.

Legal Intervention for Victims and Empowerment: Through MidPenn's Legal Intervention for Victims and Empowerment (LIVE) project, funded by grants from the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency we are able to offer additional free legal representation to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in protection orders, family law, housing and expungement. Currently, the LIVE project operates in Berks, Blair, Clearfield, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Lancaster, Lebanon, Schuylkill and York Counties. In the Franklin, Fulton, Lancaster and York counties specialized services are available to elder victims of abuse and financial exploitation.

Veterans Legal Aid: Support for those Experiencing or Facing Homelessness: The Legal Aid for Veterans Project is funded by the Veterans Administration. Free civil legal services for veterans living in Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon Perry, Schuylkill and York counties.  Cases included under this program are: evictions, foreclosure, habitability of rental housing, access to public housing, child support, custody, divorce, public benefits, unemployment compensation, Social Security Disability, expungement of criminal records, pardons, drivers license revocation, access to healthcare, wage claims, Family Medical Leave, employment discrimination, protection from abuse, protection from sexual assault/intimidation and tax controversies.

Since 1997, more than 400 titles from popular children's reading series have been distributed to thousands of blind children. Last year, the program provided more than 45,000 Braille books to blind children and classrooms across the country.

Through the Braille Books Program, blind children can discuss the newest book or magazine with their classmates and build their very own collection of books from popular children's reading series, just like their sighted friends.

So children with vision loss can have some books at home!

Originally called “Anna’s Book Angel Project” in memory of Anna K. Bonde, this program has provided over 112,000 free braille books to children since 2002!

Each child with vision loss ages birth-21 in the U.S. and Canada can now receive one order of 5 free braille books from Seedlings per calendar year.

A Week Away is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to finance and coordinate respite weeks for individuals and their loved ones who are dealing with a life-threatening illness — enabling them to find the peace and energy needed to continue fighting their disease.

Spectrum Sailing was born out of necessity. Our founder, Scott Herman, was looking for a sailing camp his autistic son could attend. Sadly no one would take him, so he started his own camp.  Founded in Charleston, they built the only Autism Sailing Camp in South Carolina. The local program grew and proved successful. It was then that Scott decided kids across the country needed this opportunity.  

Through the generosity of both the Autism and Sailing communities we can offer camps in multiple locations at no cost to the sailors. These kids just need a chance and Spectrum Sailing is that chance.

We Rock the Spectrum provides children with a fun and motivational enviroment to help them in the areas of strength, movement sensory processing, communication, positive behavior modification, social interactions, and self-care skills.

Who are Children with Medically Complex Conditions?

Some children require additional supports and services to successfully live in the community with their family.  DHS oversees multiple systems of care that collaboratively plans for children across the life span by strengthening services to families, reducing risk, and preventing facility admissions.  Children with Medically Complex Conditions are often included among children who require additional supports and services.  DHS generally defines children with medically complex conditions as individuals age 0 through 21 with a chronic health condition that affects three or more organ systems and requires medically necessary skilled nursing intervention to execute medical regimens to use technology for respiration, nutrition, medication administration or other bodily functions.

Respite may provide a time for the post-permanency family to get some needed time alone and then return to caring for their child rejuvenated and revived. Respite may be either inside or outside the family home. This service is designed to ensure that eligible families are supported by developing resources to alleviate the pressures of parenting children with special needs. The service focuses on utilizing competent resources to provide a continuum of care while offering flexibility to ensure the needs of parents and children are met.

Our Program cares for children with serious health problems that can’t be cured. Our team offers palliative and supportive care that fits each family’s needs.
