Lanust Class - Mayan workshop at The Minack Theatre 10.11.23

On Friday 3rd November, Lanust Class thoroughly enjoyed their trip to The Minack Theatre at Porthcurno. They were introduced to their new topic on The Mayans through a workshop; they played some drama games, they enjoyed a tour of the site and in their groups devised a piece of theatre relating to The Mayans. They performed these on the Minack stage to each other, at the end of the session.

In Porthenys Class we have been using sounds which are made by body parts such as our hands and feet. Our bodies have been used like a musical instrument to produce rhythmic sounds.

We had to start off slowly because it isn’t as easy as you’d think!

There has been some key vocabulary we’ve learnt: Pulse, Vibration, Rhythm, Pitch – high and low.

In Senara Class we have been exploring Healthy Living. We talked about the importance of hygiene. We conducted an experiment to see how easily germs can spread and how we can prevent them from spreading by washing our hands. We can’t wait to experiment more in the year. We love being scientists!

Porthia Class have used the ipads to become "Games Programmers". We have used Scratch Jr to help us programme a rocket ship to fly around in space, visiting and landing on various planets. We are learning to write a series of instructions or algorithms to make the rocket move and after trying out our programming we will de-bugged it to improve it. We will then move on to creating and programming a set of arrow keys to "manually" control the rocket just like they did on Apollo 11 when they were out of control in space.

Flanders Fields

We took time to reflect on Flanders Fields and what a precious place it is. Children then painted with water colours their own field of poppies and thought about words to describe Flanders Fields and what it meant to themselves or other people. In our English lesson we learnt how to use inverted commas and used them to write questions for Dr James Hickey. Then in geography this afternoon, Dr Hickey gave us a call and answered our questions. He was so impressed at the in depth, thoughtful questions asked by the children and I was so impressed by their enthusiasm and respect for our (virtual) visitor. The children even wrote down some of Dr Hickey’s answers to use in their volcano explanation text, and we told him all about making our own volcanoes. In the photos you can see Dr Hickey showing us a real piece of volcanic rock!

During our Remembrance Day celebrations, the children learnt about the symbolism of the different coloured poppies. The red poppy is worn to remember those who fought in WW1 and subsequent conflicts. Some people choose to wear a white poppy to represent peace. The purple poppy is for the animals that lost their lives serving in the war. Many animals such as horses, dogs and pigeons were used during WW1. Finally, the black poppy is used to commemorate the lives of those service men and women of a black African heritage.

In Senara Class we have been really enjoying the adventure warm up games as part of our PE lessons, climbing aboard a space ship and working with our peers using our imagination. The skill focus for our unit of PE this term is to develop the ability to jump and land with control and safety. We have learnt it's important to bend our knees when landing. We have developed our jumping skills from being able to jump forwards and backwards to now challenging ourselves to jump from side to side.

Lanust thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a planting project to enrich the biodiversity of Newlyn Green, This has been made possible with funding secured from the Environment Agency by Cllr Jim McKenna and Cllr Thalia Marrington. The session involved digging and planting shrubs, perennials and bulbs, as well as using wheelbarrows and buckets to mulch.
Daffodil bulbs were generously donated by Ron and Adrian Scamp, world renowned RHS Gold medal winning daffodil breeders based near Falmouth. Rotary Penzance have kindly given an additional 4000 crocus bulbs to highlight the work that they are doing to eradicate polio and protect children worldwide.

Syllan Class enjoyed an assembly by the Sunshine Puppet Company from Discovery Church in Penzance, exploring the theme of forgiveness through the Bible story of the unmerciful servant - with added music! The show was interactive and all of the children participated with enthusiasm. Afterwards, we discussed the message of the show together as a class. This perfectly launched our topic 'what kind of world did Jesus want?' in which we will be finding out about the gospel, the disciples and parables.

Maths Mastery is our 15 minute Maths fluency lesson we have 4 times a week. We started off earlier this term using our subitising skills, which is where we can look at a group of objects and realise how many there are without counting. This helps us when we are writing number sentences too. We have also been looking closely at the Hungarian number pattern (die) pattern number 5, which helps children recap and practise their number bonds to 10. In their clip we are investigating odd numbers.

Over the last eight weeks Syllan class have enjoyed music technology sessions with Si Gordon on Friday mornings. Using Garage Band, the children have learnt how to compose a track using the different tools. They have explored changing volume and pitch, using different instruments digitally, voice recording, creating a beat and even adding special effects. The children have absolutely loved the sessions and have created their own original music! Today was our final session, and we presented our tracks to the rest of the class. Lots of the children collaborated on their music, using their teamwork skills, and all of the adults were really impressed with their new skills and their amazing creativity.
The finished tracks will be on Seesaw so that the children can share it with their grown ups!

In Porthia Class we have been learning about pirates, their clothing, jobs and property. We had an experience day where we walked the plank, sang sea shanties and made pirate ships, it was great fun! To understand how it felt to carry out pirate jobs, we acted them out in front of the class and they have to guess what it was.
We have written a whole non-chronological report all about pirates!

Syllan Class - Autumn Term Project with Newlyn Gallery

In the Autumn, Syllan Class were lucky enough to participate in an intergenerational project with Paul Nature Group, a dementia-friendly walking group led by Sensory Trust. Hosted by Newlyn Gallery, the children worked with artists, together with Paul Nature Group, to walk, talk and create art! This included making cyanotypes with items found on the beach, creating rubbings from textures around the harbor, and taking photographs of life in Newlyn. Even stormy weather couldn’t stop us, and the children loved being out and about and chatting to new people.
The photographs taken are now being exhibited alongside work by international artists in the exhibition Storm Warning at Newlyn Gallery.

Children from Syllan Class applied to represent their class as ‘Art Ambassadors’ and those chosen visited the gallery to document the exhibition. They took part in a conversation with Paul Nature Group about their experiences of the project, and asked some thoughtful questions. They then reported back to the rest of the class.

Syllan’s enthusiasm shone this week in their first cricket session with A Chance To Shine! The children worked on their throwing and catching skills, then learnt a new game called Rapid Fire. The children cheered their team mates on, practiced their skills and kept themselves warm by running as fast as possible.
We will be focusing on cricket this term and working on our batting and fielding.

Senara Class have started to learn about the Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. This week we enjoyed looking at and talking about the 4 portraits he created using fruits, vegetables and plants relating to the relevant season. The children then created their own collage cutting out pictures of different fruits and vegetables. There was lots of discussion about which fruits and vegetables would be best to represent our eyes, nose, mouth etc. Next week the children will have the opportunity to create portraits using real fruits and vegetables and then photographing their creations.

Lanust Class Diary Entries 26.1.2024

Lanust Class are thoroughly enjoying their class novel, Street Child. It is set in the Victorian era and is based on the true story of a child that inspired Dr. Barnardo to set his ‘ragged schools’.
The children have written a diary entry as Jim Jarvis, the main character, describing the day that he spent the family’s last shilling.
We decided to tea stain the work, to give it the appearance of being old. Unfortunately, we did this on the originals, before photocopying, so please excuse any smudges.
Some of the children recorded themselves, reading their work - we hope you enjoy listening to them.
Coming soon: the children will write detailed character descriptions of characters that they have yet to be introduced to.

An assembly on the Sea Cadets.
Today, Freya Peachey, from the Sea Cadets, came into school to talk to the children about how they could join them and about the exciting things they could do there.
The nearest unit for our children is in Penzance, where they aim to give young people an experience that will help them grow into the person they want to be, in a safe and friendly environment. Through various activities and adventures, they learn teamwork, respect, loyalty, self-confidence, commitment, self-discipline, honesty and how to be the best version of themselves.

To kick off their learning about Crime and Punishment the children got to experience what it was like for Georgian and Victorian criminals. As we were led through the Dark Walk, we learnt about notorious Cornish criminals such as Selina Wadge who was sentenced to death by hanging because she murdered her two year old son (Henry) by dropping him in a well. We also learnt about the Lightfoot Brothers who were convicted of murdering Neville Norway during a highway robbery. At the end of the guided tour, the children got to experience their very own long drop; there were a few screams!

Year Six have been having fun enjoying the skipping ropes. They’ve been practising partner skipping and turning around in a large skipping rope. We all had great fun!

During storytelling week, the children were lucky enough to receive a workshop from the Institute of Imagination. The children learnt how to use a range of animation techniques such as: disappearing, shrinking, growing, flying and dancing. The children quickly picked up the techniques and have put together some exciting animations.

Syllan Class Spring Term 1 Forest School

Syllan Class have enjoyed Forest School this term. We have created art from charcoal and found objects, sharpened sticks, built dens and set fires. We have learnt important skills such as using knives safely, starting and maintaining small fires with a flint and steel and constructing lean-to shelters. To celebrate all of our learning we had a lovely end of term fire and shared marshmallows. A huge thank you from Syllan to Mr Hickman for running this provision!

Lanust Class have been digging, planting and mulching again. This time, they were doing so as part of a project to improve the play area at Gwavas and enrich the site for both the local community and wildlife.
All the children worked really well - it was hard work, not to mention muddy!

Syllan class came to school dressed to impress on World Book Day! We loved taking some photos together in our outfits while talking excitedly about different book characters and things that make us happy. Since it was also International Women’s Day we read some beautiful poems by women and spoke about the ideas of equality and fairness. Syllan Class had lots of thoughtful and interesting things to say on these subjects and discussed their own experiences.
The highlight of the day was the Book Swap, all children were able to choose a ‘new’ book to take home. Thank you to Mrs Buckingham for organising this!

Our children thoroughly enjoyed discussing their favourite books, sharing stories and of course exchanging books during our book swop, where every child took a book home to enjoy. During the day, children had the opportunity to design a book cover for their favourite book and share these during a show and tell session. This term Lanust Class have been studying “The Circle of Life” where we have been investigating how different plants and animals reproduce. We have started off by dissecting a daffodil to identify the different parts of the flower and their various functions. We have also explored the Life Cycle of a chicken and identified the different stages which the chicken goes through from egg to adult chicken.

St Piran’s Day 2024

Miraculously in a week of rain, the sun shone on St Piran’s Day!
Children from Syllan Class, as well as the school band from across Key Stage 2, took part in the furry dance this year. The children looked so smart in their white jumpers (thank you FONS!) as we danced through town. In Morrab gardens we heard speeches, sang Trelawney and Cornwall My Home before dancing back to St John’s Hall for a saffron bun. All of the children represented Newlyn school wonderfully, and were a credit both to us and to their families.
Special thank you to the adults who joined us on the parade and helped out, we are so grateful for your time and it was lovely to have our families with us!

St Piran’s in Penwith Concert 4.3.24

10 children from Syllan class joined the St Piran’s school choir this year with over 100 children from schools in the area. They learnt lots of songs, some in Cornish, and attended a special rehearsal. The evening performance was incredibly well attended and the children sounded stunningly beautiful singing harmonies and rounds in St John’s Hall. Miss Allam and Mrs Wood were so impressed and proud! The children even had a go at some traditional dancing which was loads of fun.
Well done Louisa, George, Amaya, Imogen, Fenna, Kira, Paisley, Keevah, Evie and Elodie, you are singing superstars!

Porthia Class Week Beginning 04/03/2024 Money

In Porthia class this half term we have been learning all about Money. At the end of our unit, the classroom was turned into a shop where we had to buy items and work out how much money to give the cashier. When it was our turn to be the cashier, we had the role of finding the correct change to give to the customer. The children worked in pairs and enjoyed shopping for toys and food! What a great way to end the Money Unit!

Porthenys Class have daily Phonics lessons, which not only help with reading, but are also key to help with writing. Reading is a really important way for us to develop writing skills and vocabulary.
We have recently been studying an information text and you can see children have looked for the shape of the text. This has included looking at what is included in the text layout and information within it. Children have then begun experimenting with their own sentences in their writing to include descriptions of actions. We are using new writing grids/templates to develop handwriting further, here is an example of one of our children’s first try with it and she did really well!

Swim Safe Competition

Just before Christmas a group of swimmers travelled to Bodmin and represented the school in a Swim Safe competition where they raced against children from other schools in a variety of challenges based around keeping safe in the water. The teams did incredibly well coming away with a Bronze Medal and an award for showing determination, one of the School Games Values.

Dodgeball

Recently a group of Year 5 and Year 6 children travelled to Truro to take part in the school’s first ever dodgeball tournament. Having never played Dodgeball competitively before both teams were on a steep learning curve but improved with each and every game. We are looking forward to next year’s tournament when we hope to return much stronger.

Indoor Athletics

Just before Easter the school entered a Y3/4 and a Y5/6 team into the School Games Indoor Athletics Competition at Mounts Bay Academy where the children competed in a variety of track and field events. Both teams performed very well, narrowly missing out on medals but represented the school incredibly well.

Porthia Class - Continuous Cricket

Some of our younger children entered the School Games Continuous Cricket Festival recently at Mounts Bay Academy and had the opportunity to fine tune some of their skills they have been learning in a competitive format. The children all played very well and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were a real credit to the school.

We have had the BEST time exploring our woodland area and learning lots of new skills during our Forest School sessions. We have built shelters, challenged ourselves in the laser maze, learnt how to make a fire and enjoyed toasting marshmallows.

Porthia Class - Food chains 16th April 2024

Porthia Class explored food chains in Science. They were able to identify the predator and prey and that food chains usually start with a plant. They then used this knowledge to work in pairs and create their own food chains from different plants and animals. Some children challenged themselves even further and made 6-7 step food chains. Well done!

In Porthenys class we have been developing our knowledge about the ports and harbours. As we live in such a special place that has a port we also looked further afield to compare the port of Felixstowe. We were amazed at the size of the container ships and how busy it is there. Equally though, children recognised how special Newlyn is and how important it is to people who live here too.

Porthia Truthfulness Class Assembly

Porthia class presented a class asssembly all about Truthfulness. The children acted out different scenarios that may occur in school and how they can be resolved. Being honest about situations can help resolve and find solutions for the future. The narrators portrayed this message well to the whole school and parents. The class have used the virtue of truthfulness day to day, which is great!

Porthia Class - Apostrophes for contraction

Year 2 consolidated their knowledge of Apostrophes for Contraction by carrying out 'surgical' procedures of different words. They enjoyed cutting out the letter that needed to be removed and patching the words up using plasters and drawing the apostrophe in the correct place. What fun!

Porthia Class - Newlyn Art Gallery

Porthia class have had the privilege of attending Newlyn Art Gallery for 2 workshops all about Newlyn’s fishing village and harbour. Students from Falmouth University studying illustration, constructed and delivered amazing workshops which highlighted the children’s creativity.

The children have loved making jellyfish, origami boats, collage psds creatures, fishermen and much more - all while overlooking the beautiful sea view!

Porthia Class - Mechanisms

Porthia Class have been learning all about mechanisms during their Design and Technology learning. They have tested different types of mechanisms and chose one to use in an Easter Card. The majority of children chose a version of a slider, using a slit or a pin in the paper. They loved experimenting with different moving objects. Great work!

Porthia Class - The Day The Chairs Quit-April/May 2024

OH NO!! A tragedy has happened in year 2 this term…the chairs have quit! They are not happy with how they have been treated recently and have gone on strike. Year 2 received a very unhappy letter from the chairs outlining their concerns and as a result, they went a whole day without chairs and had to sit on the carpet/move around all day!

Year 2 now have to write a letter back to the chairs to persuade them to stay for good! Do you think they will? Stay tuned…
