The Manhattan project is the code name for the secret US project, set up in 1914, to develop the first atomic bomb. This project was started in response to fears that German scientists had been working on a weapon using nuclear technology and that Hitler was prepared to use it. The scientist in charge of the operation was the theoretical physician Robert Oppenheimer that worked in the Los Alamos Laboratory, where the first bombs were created and tested.

The consequences of dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were so devastating that the threat of nuclear attack has shaped global politics ever since.
There are several examples of this in history. The most significant is probably represented by the Cold War. Atomic weapons were a cornerstone of the cold war and they helped to ensure that rising tensions did not escalate to full-scale hostilities.

The bombings had a distinct effect on Japanese popular culture. This is evident in movies and anime.
“Godzilla is absolutely an atomic bomb document,” said Napier, a well-known journalist. “It’s absolutely a reworking—a reprocessing of the atomic bombing—instead of having a bomb come out and destroy Tokyo, you have this monster from the deep who is radioactive and is brought out from American nuclear testing.”

The image of America has changed since 1945. Reading Black Rain, a popular novel from the 1960s about the Hiroshima bombing by Masuji Ibuse, the reader does not sense much anger against America. Rather, the protagonist’s anger is directed at Japan’s military government. That was partially a result of Douglas MacArthur’s strategy to rule postwar Japan. His strategy was to turn the blame on Japan’s military government and not on the Allied occupying forces.
