Eustress is defined as good stress as people believe they work better under pressure so it acts as a stimulate to overcome challenges that we face. A sporting example may be feeling the pressure to play well in a big game and that stress motivating you more.

Distress is a form of extreme anxiety that can lead to extreme sadness or pain. It is the complete opposite of eustress as it does not motivate somebody and so can have a really negative impact on somebody's life. If somebody in sport is distressed it can lead to them not enjoying the sport and performing badly.

Some stressors are internal - stress-inducing thoughts or behaviors. These thoughts come from psychological or emotional feelings, like being depressed or worried, or putting pressure on yourself to be perfect.

Other stressors come from external factors, which are forces that you can't easily control. Examples are a major life event, pressure to pay off debts, anxiety over public speaking or an upcoming exam. These are called external stressors.

Internal and external stressors can have the same physical and psychological effects. You may have trouble sleeping, lose your appetite or lose interest in daily activities. You may be irritable, have headaches, stomach pains or find that you cry easily.

Personal stress is stress that is a result of your personal life. So it can have a really big impact on you in other aspects of life. An example of personal stress is the death of a loved one and I know that it can have a real negative impact for a long amount of time.

Occupational stress is stress that is result of your job, you may be put under pressure by your boss to improve the amount of work you are doing and asking to stay later to do more work and as the workload adds up you get less personal time and it can make you very stressed especially if you have other commitments

The sporting environment you are put in as well can cause stress because if you are playing in a high pressure environment it can add extra stress and therefore you feel on edge and you are unlikely to play well.

Situational symptoms are split into event importance and uncertainty. Event importance such as a cup final can place stress you will feel so it can either motivate you or demotivate you. Uncertainty is a factor because the greater the uncertainty the more stress you will feel and we cannot do anything to prevent uncertainty. The uncertainty of the future of your sporting career has bee found out to be a big cause of stress.

Personality causes of stress such as trait anxiety as the traits of somebody can see a situation as more threatening of somebody else.A highly trait anxious person sees competition as threatening whilst somebody the opposite doesn't. Self esteem can play a big role as if they don;t believe they can achieve their goals they are unlikely to reach it as they are already half way to giving up. Social physique anxiety is how anxious somebody is when somebody else sees their physique and it can lead to people being nervous or apprehensive.

When the body is stressed, the SNS generates what is known as the "fight or flight" response. The body shifts all of its energy resources toward fighting off a life threat, or fleeing from an enemy. The SNS signals the adrenal glands to release hormones called Adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones cause the heart to beat faster, respiration rate to increase, blood vessels in the arms and legs to dilate, digestive process to change and glucose levels (sugar energy) in the bloodstream to increase to deal with the emergency.
(SNS - Sympathetic nervous system)

Loss of self confidence - This can lead to a poor patch of form, for example Chesterfield FC this season, they are at the bottom end of league two and they are in a poor patch of form and they have a lack of confidence in the squad and they need to turn it around if the want to stay in the division.

Lack of concentration can lead to stress and mistakes. A example of this is when a keeper is watching a cross into their hands and they try to throw the ball quickly before having a proper grip so it leads to them dropping it and possibly conceding a goal.
