The myth attempts to explain why there are spring and winter seasons.

Hades fell in love with Demeter's daughter, Persephone, so while she was gathering flowers in a field he decided to abduct her. He emerged from a crack in the earth on his chariot and kidnapped her, taking her with him to the underworld. While in the underworld, Hades tried to win Persephone's love by giving her gifts and treating her with kindness. Eventually, the god of the underworld tricked the girl into staying with him by persuading her to eat a pomegranate; In Greek mythology, eating the fruit of a place meant that one had to return to that area. So, Persephone had to spend six months every year in the underworld with Hades as a result of eating six of the pomegranate seeds. Each year, during the six months that Persephone is in the underworld, her mother becomes very upset and grieves, causing the plants and vegetation to die. And every time Persephone returned to surface,  Demeter would be happy, and plants would regrow.

His sisters were Demeter, goddess of agriculture, Hestia, goddess of hearth and home, and Hera, goddess of marriage and birth and queen of the gods. Hades' wife is Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Together, he and his wife had four children Erinyes, Zagreus, Melinoe, and Macaria.

In other versions, Hades was threatened or wounded by the demi god.
