They do this by carrying forward local histories and identities, particularly those of Brazil's neglected populations. The Campana brothers first attracted attention with their Uncomfortable series of metal seats in the late 1980s, and then shot to international popularity in the 1990s by creating chairs out of odd pieces of wood that were nailed and glued together. The instantly recognizable mop-like VERMELHA CHAIR, made of more than 500 yards of rope, and the FAVELA CHAIR, inspired by the inventive residents of local favelas (shantytowns), who build their homes from whatever materials come to hand, have both become icons.
