The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a book based on a sixteen year old girl named Starr Carter. She lives in a rundown neighborhood called garden heights but goes to a fancy rich private school with more opportunities for her education. The book focuses on her having to balance a double life like being one of the only black kids there and the Black Lives Matter riots going around in her city after a white police officer killed a black teenage boy because they thought he had a gun.

her childhood best friend Khalil Harris gets shot by an officer on his way home from a party and she witnesses the whole thing.

Riots breakout everywhere in garden heights over Khalid’s death and their family has to go into hiding because news got out that Starr was the one with Khalil in the car.

The day before Starr is going to be in front of the judge and jury for Khalil is case shots are fired at starrs house so they end up staying at her uncles house who lives my starrs school.

The book takes place in garden heights an inter city neighborhood, possibly a fictionalized version of the Georgetown neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi, this story is split between garden heights and a wealthier area at a school called Williamson private school. The time period was around BLM time when there were a lot of fights and riots going on. These fights and riots affected the main character of the story personally. The story mainly took place in the rundown town of garden heights where the main character lives. However it also takes place at the private school she goes to.

I think that the message of this book is to not discriminate against others and your words can mean something to someone and to love yourself the way you are. i know this because the whole book she talks about self love, discriminating against people, and equality in all groups of people. Finally I feel like because of how deep this book is that there was to be some personal experience behind it and has to mean something to the author.

I picked “Waiting on the world to change” By John Mayer. I picked this song because I feel that it described the book very well. After one of the characters died there were many things that started like riots and protests over it. Therefore I feel that starr would have related to this song very much and was just wanting for the world to change and for things to get better for her and community.
