In today's session we discussed our AS solos. Our solos this year will be marked on the solos as a solo in performance and in a dance style of a practitioner. The way that the solos work is that you have to do a live performance between 2-3 minutes. You are aloud to:
>Use REP
>Mash ups
>Stereotypes
>Music
However, using all these elements to make a solo, you have to make sure that the solo that is produced looks as if the practitioner has worked with you to produce the movement. So therefore we have to study their workshops aswell as their movement. So this is where our research came into place this is where we would incapulate style.

The solo was split into different catogories.
1) Physical and Technical skills

-How do they train?
-Correct alignment for practitioner?
-flexing and extension?
-rotation
-specific body parts
-transferement of weight
-locamtion
-elevation
-balance
To make a solo all these elements would have to be covered and explored in the way our chosen practitioner would use.
Another area that would be assessed would be our performance skills, which would include:

-fave
-intention
-communication
-stimulus
-engagement
-projection
-focus
-expression
-emphasis
-musicality

Whilst watching bournes work I noticed that there were many different elements to his work that seems to have depictions such as using movements of characteristics, REP, Stimulus, engaging, 3D effects, humour and seriousness, and modernisement of work.

We then done an exercise where we had to watch a video clip and wrote down our thoughts on how we felt about the video.

Q) How can you better show a further understanding of your practitioner base range of choreography?

In today's session we had to speak about our research on our chosen practitioner, For my solo I decided to chose the practioner Akram Khan So therefore I had to look into his work more.

I looked into some of his work such as: Ma, Desh, Zero degrees.

Zero degrees is about Akram and Sido Larbi Chakoui talking about their double heritage and crossing the boarders with passport difficulty.

So therefore during this lesson we discussed the main areas of Khans work and how you can embody his movement and workshops in order to prepare to use his material in a solo. The main features were the use of head. Khans work is very sufficient with his disicion making in knowing which direction each body part is meant to be facing. Another feature of Khans work is that he works with fast and high energy in order to show build up of story. Khan also uses uses many trates from his past for example; katak, religion, culture and memories.

Target: For my target for this week I want to further my understandment of some of Akram Khans work and look closely into his speaking work.

In today's session our main objective and focus was the idea of pointing!!

Is there other ways to point with your body other than your finger?
This is the question I left the class with a full answer. Today's session we worked out that any body part can be the main area of pointing! Even without looking at it stereotypically! We worked out that your elbow can be in a high diagonal plane behind your back but can still be your main pointing point! We worked out that the main pointing place is where your focus and projection is placed. We workshopped this idea of using different body parts.

The second task we took part in today was working with the idea of hand manipulation. This means we were put into partners and one of the partners had to use the palm of there hand to draw the second partners focus on able to manipulate their body in anyway of form. The imagery we got from watching this exercise was that the movement was as so a wizard had put a spell or something and was able to control it.

Strength: My strength of this lesson was that I was able to keep a clear focus of the exercise but a clear focus of where I was projecting and performing to!

Weakness/Target: a weakness of this lesson was that sometimes I struggled to move in time with the hand, however this will all come with more practice and experimenting! So my target for this exercise was to keep moving without thinking to much about the movement.

Solo: What technique/style/work/ reasons

Q1) What elements of the style are you exploiting in the solo??
>REP
>interpretation
>stimulus and theme
>Speech and gestures

Throughout my Khan solo I have decided to take into consideration the ideas of REP, however throughout my work I tried to develope the movement by using my own interpretation and using movement that compliments my body. The stimulus and themes I have decided to go down is the idea of using personal memories and using speech and gestures to create this piece, from my knowledge of Khans work he uses his past to interpretation and create his movement. Therefore I have decided to talk about a personal memorie in order to structure my solo. I also wrote out my music so I can look at what sections are what I’m able to use my musicality to fit the movement.
Throughout my research I studied the video of zero degrees with partner side larbi, they did their duet based on memories of passing through departures..identity

Q2) What is the dynamic range?
>sustained/sudden?

With Khan he uses very high energy and intense movement. The way khan uses his movement is through sharp and sudden movement, however, Khan uses the ideas of stops sudden and carrying on the movement with dramatic movement.

Q3) Are you using traditional choreographic movements?

In some respects I feel that I use traditional movements in the way that I am using Khans rep, however I change and intemperate the movement and use my own ideas and research to create my solo.

Q4) what style does your solo use?
>Hybrid (more than one)

My solo is contemporary style based, due to Khans my practioners chosen style is contemporary.

I’m todays session, we had to teach our peers what our solo was all about and why we picked our chosen practitioner. The way in which I chose to do this was show a video clip of Khans work “zero degrees” and discuss and analysis why I chose this work. The reason behind this was that I am going to think about speech and natural breath in my work as this is one of the stylistic features of Khans work. So therefore I wanted to put my ideas forward and tell the class the way in which can uses memories and storie telling to engage in his work.

Another section I did in my workshop was show Khans work “Ma” I did this as I wanted to explain to the class how I decided I wanted to REP work, but it didn’t succeed as I felt I wanted to put my own interpretation on the work in able for the movement to complement my body. I felt that showing the two video clips showed the class how Khan uses his energy, focus, intensity and movement through the floor to his full potential.

After showing the video clip I then taught my peers, a phrase from my solo that included, intense movements, for example I used a windmill roll into a monkey jump to create levels within my material. I also showed how by pushing your energy that natural breath is presented. From today’s session it taught me that my movement can be very successful in its approaches to Khans work ethic, but it’s the way I intepreatate, perform and use my movement to its full quality is what makes the solo.

My feedback from Craig, was that my workshop was very informative to the class and how it should all teachings and aspects in to Khan motifs and stimuli. Another feedback is Craig thought I had great communication and made the workshop enjoyable and engaging.

This is some evidence of my class doing my workshop. I took this photo as I wanted to see what move they thought beat described Khan. From receiving this feedback it showed me that my teaching was informative as the whole class really thought about the way in which Khan uses his signature bangaladesh hand movement and fancy footwork.

The reason behind using this move for my choreography is that Akram Khan uses this movement through his pieces, For example MA when wanting to travel before moving through the floor, I decided to use this idea of movement and accumulate and Angalise the positioning of the lounge and the arms it’s self so therefore it was a motif development of Khans work. I also used many more of Khans significant movements such as the wakking off the hands and shunting across the floor.

In my individual rehearsal today, I decided to teach my phrase to one of my class mates. The reason behind doing this task was that I was able to go through my phrase and make sure I was able to explain everything with full description, For example I was able to show how the movements dynamic range altered between sharp and sustained. Another reason why I taught my solo to another person, was that I was able to explain how the music was structure to able complement the choreography. I wrote my music out and structured and layer out my notes in order to show Chloe where each phrases sat within the routine.

Here is my evidence of Chloe attempting my phrase in the style of Khan. From watching the video back I was able to analysis my teaching methods, From this video I was able to see that I wasn’t as clear on my dynamics as I could have been. I chose to take this as a positive aspectmore than a negative aspect as I was then able to go back and clarify my movement and reherse the dynamics. My targets from today’s session was to find more ways to use the floor by watching Rep from Khans works.

As an individual who hasn’t had that much knowledge on a lot of Khans work I took it upon myself to watch some of his work. One of the works that I decided to look at was sacred monsters. One of the main points that stood out to me was that Khan was very visual in the way that he uses his specials and power specials within the piece. This means that he had a intense way of making the audience/ viewer watch him in the way that he’s so full on around the star that it’s hard to keep up with his positioning on stage. Another thing that I learnt about Khans work is that his movement is forever flowing and elaborating unless Khan decided to come to a sudden stop. Which he uses to create power and atmosphere. In Sacred monster you could clearly see and notice the Bangaladesh decoration used to interpret the piece.

One move that I notice that Khan uses as a signature movement is the idea of shunting. I used this idea to create a workshop, which we then done as a class in the idea of shunting from one side of the stage to the other, the ability to shunt with efficiency is one thing, but the ability to create th Bare foot slapping noises on the floor is another, which is a key aspect in Khans work as he likes to use natural sound.

This is some evidence of my class feedback! My main feedback that I had from today’s session was where was my focus and projection?? At first I thought I was using my projection and focus well but then I really got into the concept of how would Khan use his projection and focus?? this meaning is Khan an external dancer or internal dancer? The way in which I builded on this was buy thinking of ways of which I can use my focus point of something different then just my eyes or finger, so therefore a task came out of this. I started workshopping the idea of how I can manipulate my body parts into my focus points. For example I used the way of using my shoulder as my main part that I wanted to focus on but projected forward with my right had straightened out in front of me with a blade hand. I then used to idea of using my arabesque line with my upper body tilted with my knee being the focus point and so on. This task showed me that I wasn’t using my full body movement to create different images within my movement.

We then done another task as a class which was showing the different impowerments of walking within a routine. The way that we workshopped this idea was by standing in a straight line at the back of the room and using different impersonations and powers to see what type of atmospheres we would create:
The first exercise we did was just walking normally down the room, from this idea we could see that without using our postures within walking, it just looks like pedestrian walking and on stage it doesn’t come across the same. We then used the idea of walking
but with a gohost pulling you behind, a stance of a gorilla, a rugby man. Each exercise had a different out come, but the main linker of the task was how the power eyeline was used would create how powerful the piece would be.

COSTUME!
The way in which Khan uses costume is that he normally uses earthy colours such as reds, Greens, blacks. He normally wears harium trousers and bare foot, Khan focuses more on his movement and performance over what he wears;

So my ideas for my costume for the assessment show,
>black harium trousers
> a kharki short sleeve top or a white long sleeve top (depending on lighting)
>bare foot
> bun or ponytail
>natural make up
