Accessing Social media at school has the same safety concern as it would for them to access social media from home. In order to create a safe browsing environment, we need to educate our students of the danger and precautions they can take when accessing social media. We can also have a restriction to only educational social media like Edmodo while at school to create a safer environment.
Here is a video that we can show kids on how to be safer on the internet.
https://youtu.be/uKZ9-MHN1zE

A little over a week ago, I personally would have told you that social media has absolutely no place in a classroom. That was, until I heard about edmodo. I think that sources like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. have no place in the classroom, but edmodo could be a very healthy and handy source to use for classroom management and parent/teacher relationship support. Being that I am not a huge advocate for excessive use of technology in the classroom, I wouldn't recommend relying on the social media source to heavily, but I do think it could be useful in ways like I mentioned above.

I agree with Liz Corbett. Until I learned about edmodo, I never would have recommended that social media be allowed in the classroom.

I think for the sake of my own sanity, I would not want my students to be on their social media during class. Speaking from experience, the biggest distraction for me in class would be getting on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I would rather keep the technology use focused on activities and resources used for learning material focused around the classroom content instead of social media.

Social media on students' personal devices shouldn't be allowed during class, because the bullying, self comparison, and exposure to inappropriate content is the reason children are growing up so fast and suicide rates are higher than ever. It would also distract the students from learning and potentially cause problems between them. Here is a website showing the effects of social media on children and their statistics.
