In Book 1, Athena appeals to Zeus to help the protagonist in the story, Odysseus get home, as he has been wandering the seas for 10 years after serving in the Trojan War. His wife, Penelope, is being courted by many suitors who are taking over his property and rank, wanting to marry her to get Ody's land and power. The suitors also seek to eliminate Ody's son, whom Penelope sent away to be safe for now from the suitors.

Ody and his men snuck into a cave and ate all of the cheese and water, which was not very smart. The owner of the cave came in and at first didn't see them, but then when he did he decided he was hungry and ate 2 of Ody's men. They were plotting through the night and when morning came, they were going to stab the cyclops but they realised that they wouldn't be able to get out, since the massive rock was immovable for them. Then the cyclops got drunk with Ody and was stabbed in the eye. Ody and his men escaped under the sheep which the cyclops was caring for. Ody’s troops open the bag and it sends them back to Aelus’s island, where he refuses to help them any more since the troops opened the bag. They stay on the island where there are cannibals, one of their ships are destroyed, and lose 45 men.

On the way home, the crew has to go threw the Sirens' waters- they're known for wrecking sailors and singing. Ody has to be tied down to the rowbench and plugged his ears with beeswax.
