Bunker Hill

As militia men gather on the hills outside of Boston with increasing numbers and fortifications, a worried General Thomas Gage sends troops out to take the position. While they were ultimately able to succeed in their task, the British faced twice as many casualties as the Americans. This battle further showed the colonists' ability to take on the overall superior British army.

Lexington and Concord

Upon arriving in Lexington to confiscate weapons from the colonists, British troops were met by an armed militia. During the standoff between these soldiers, a shot was fired. While it is unknown who fired first, this bullet led to the death and wounding of several at Lexington and the first battle of the Revolutionary War. British troops continued to Concord but found themselves surrounded by Minute Men who continued to ambush them as they retreated to Boston. This was ultimately a victory for the Americans and gave many hope for their chances in this war.

Trenton

In late 1776, after taking several losses, the Americans crossed the Delaware River and led his men to an ambush of 1,500 Hessians in Trenton. The army that the British thought was all but defeated destroyed a major garrison and suffered almost no casualties. The Americans also managed to capture critical supplies, including food and clothing, in the process. The victory set the stage for another success at Princeton a week later and greatly boosted the morale of the American troops.

Saratoga

British troops advanced along the Hudson River, taking wins and losses along the way. However, they found themselves outnumbered upon encountering a fort near Saratoga, and suffered heavy losses before surrendering. The Battle of Saratoga was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War, and the American defeat of the British army furthered the hope for independence and helped to secure the foreign support needed to win the war.

Cowpens

Britain attempted to take the southern colonies and control the resources in the area to sell at a substantial profit. However, they alienated the Loyalists and freed slaves in the area, leading to a lack of assistance from any colonists. When Americans led by Brigadier General Daniel Morgan were sent southwest of the Catawba River to cut supply lines and hinder British operations, the British sent Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton to block Morgan's progress. The ensuing battle led to an embarrassing defeat for the British, and it was a critical American victory in the Revolutionary War that further weakened British attempts to seize the southern colonies from American control.

Yorktown

Washington and his French ally, Lt. Gen. Comte de Rochambeau had to decide between striking a blow on Britain in New York City or aiming for Yorktown in the south. They bet on the south, where they were assured critical naval support from a French fleet. The Allied armies marched hundreds of miles from their headquarters north of New York City to Yorktown, making the the largest troop movement of the American Revolution. They surprised the British in a siege that conquered Britain and turned the tide toward an American victory in the War for Independence.This last major battle of the American Revolution led to negotiations for peace with the British and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
