Unlike the first war there were no segregated battalions. But some were able to join units alongside there fellow white soldiers. There were even some memorable mentions. Like Cecilia Butler, working in the munitions plant.

Cecilia's POV

Dear Diary,
Another hard day at work. things are moving extremely fast here. With the second war around the corner. I have a full load on my back working in the factories day and night. It's not easy working in these factories. I must be very careful. One mistake and I'm fired and it's not from me messing up. It's from the colour of my skin.

Despite the many prejudices First Nations faced, just about 4000 people including 72 women joined the Canadian Forces. Many First Nation people resented the idea of serving a gov't that treated them badly. Still, there where many communities in which the entire male population volunteered. First Nations volunteered in record numbers, signing up about the same rate as other Canadians. However, they did not receive the same benefits that other veterans received during the war

Dear Diary,

After years of countless rejection by the Canadian Army and the widespread discrimination imposed not only to me, but my people, I finally did it and got past all of these obstacles. At last, I, together with my brother, was accepted in the Canadian Army and will finally serve as a Canadian soldier in World War II.

But why did I want to join the army in the first place? I ask this question to myself everyday. The answer to this kept me going and made me want to try over and over again even after getting declined numerous times. All my life, I had wanted to do something to help my people recover their good name. I wanted to show that they were as good as any White man.

Serving in the Canadian Army doesn't mean that I don't resent the government that treated me and my people badly. However, rather than doing nothing, I wanted to let the whole world know, not just Canada, that First Nations people are equally as competent as any other White person.

I am not serving just because I wanted to. Rather, I am serving for my people and because of my people.

The English language was becoming more popular and theses francophone's felt out of place they didn't know the language and jobs revolved around English. Nationalism was growing in Quebec, Francophone's were suppose to speak french and be catholic. Lionel Groulx a the spokesperson for francophone's at the time expressed that Canadian immigration should be kept catholic only and Jewish people shouldn't enter. he also stated during the depression many Quebecois were going through hard times and blamed it on anglophone and america. Quebec had a lot of problems between the province and the outside country.

dear diary,

So I lied about my age to join the Canadian Forces.

My dream was is too be an army driver. I got a driver course in Kitchener,Ontario but after a few months I was caught by the Colonel. They asked me "What did you think you would accomplish by lying about your age and driving experience?" I answered "I really wanted to join the army and I really wanted to be a driver-an army driver. I knew I could be a good driver and I knew I knew I would love the army. I just needed a chance to prove it, but how could get a chance if I waited until I was 18? The war might be over before then. So lied. I'm sorry I lied, Ma'am, but I'm not sorry to be in the army or to be a driver."

They said they have been in touch with my grandmother, she was upset to know that I had taken a big step without consulting her.
