He was born Leonard Alfred Schneider, in Mineola, New York. His parents divorced when he was only 5 years old and he attended high school in Belmore until he ran away from home at 16. Bruce started doing stand up comedy at 22 and found some success before he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. After 3 years, he received an honorable discharge after posing as a transvestite. Around that time, he also fell in love with a showgirl and stripper named Honey. The two got married and moved to California where he resumed his stand-up career, this time giving edgier, more controversial performances. He was known as "the controversial nightclub comedian whose acts were sprinkled with four-letter words and pungent social satire" Eventually his acts were flagged by the authorities and and he was arrested numerous times for obscenity along with being banned from multiple places. Bruce was also repeatedly arrested for possession of drugs and prescribed narcotics. He was acquitted for those charges but they were fairly pricey and cost him a great deal of money. In the fall of 1965, he declared bankruptcy. The following summer of 1966, Bruce was found dead in his home due to a morphine overdose.
