Semantics - Study of meaning in language.
Semantics study the basic, the literal meanings of the words as it is part of our language system.

Semantics divided into two: lexical semantics and phrasal semantics.
Lexical semantics study about the word meaning, while phrasal semantics study about the principles construction of the phrases and sentence meaning.

Semantics is the most diverse field in linguistics. It can be associated with other subjects such as philosophy and psychology. The term 'meaning' itself were used in a variety of ways, as the topics provides with many layers and not everyone study the layers in the same way. However, this may creates confusion of the subjects that were studied since it can be used in a variety of ways. Semantics needs to be constricted into literal interpretations of sentences and ignoring things suc as irnony, metaphor, or conversational.

New pieces of information:
Autonomous learning - Learner may able to learn independently and may help them developed their own style of way to learn. Learner learns to be responsible with the resources they gather to help them with their study.

Meaning - the term of 'meaning' may correspond to the theory which explain about a person who gives the symbols of language the meanings it has. A correct semantic theory constraints on correct foundational theory of meaning.

Skepticism about meaning - one tradition in the philosophy of language denies that there are facts about the meanings of linguistic as the relevant facts simply not around to be described or analyzed which neither to be found in semantic theory or foundational theory of meaning.

Personal Review on the Problematic in Determining Meanings from Referential Theory and Representational Theory

Referential theory

A meaning in Referential theory is when a word has managed to refers into a meaningful expression. The problematic that occurs in meaning and Referential theory is that a single word may have more than one meaning. This dismisses in determining the true meaning of the word. For example, word such as ‘to’ or ‘in’ is meaningful but it is not considered recognizable. I personally disagree with the problematic that occurs since this problem only applied to certain word, whereas Referential theory itself has helped a lot of words in declaring their meaningful expression.

Representational theory

Representational theory is when a person mind would produce images, ideas or thoughts when given any kind of word. For example, when a person heard the word ‘Apple’, an image of a red or green apple might appear in the person’s mind. The problem with this theory is that it would be difficult for a person’s mind to produce an images, ideas, or thoughts if they never heard or associated with the word before. I agree with this theory since if we never heard or associated with a word before, then it would be difficult to determine the images or the resemblance that were represented by the word.

1. What are the new knowledge you form from working on the activity?

The new knowledge that I form is that meaning is not abstract, such as the meaning provided from the dictionary. Different individual have different perspective to specific meaning, as they had a personal attachment or understanding with the meaning.

2. What are two interesting facts of Types of Meaning you can identify from their project?

The first interesting fact is how meaning have a different perception and usage in social classes. Specific social class will have a better understanding with their own social class, difference of social class may create a conflict as there are slang that one another social class did not understand.

The second interesting fact is the way we expressed our meaning can have a different meaning to other individual. For example, If we in a happy mood and we expressed it passively, then people will assume that we are not in a happy mood while being sarcastic by saying "I'm happy".
