They went to bigger cities looking for jobs. They settled in cities like New York,Chicago, Los Angeles and Detroit .In the 1920s the Harlem Renaissance started. There was migration of a lot of African Americans from the south to the north. Between the 1920 and 1930 the black African Americans had their own identity separated from the west.By the end of 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance also came to an end. This was mainly because of the Stock Market Crash of 1929 which led to the Great Depression. Many African American owned businesses were hit. Augusta Savage was a sculptor from the Harlem Renaissance time. She went to New York in 1920 to study art. I picked her sculpture 'The Harp' as I found it fascinating. I read about Augusta Savage on a few websites. Like the americanart.si.edu and arthistoryproject.com. I picked her sculpture 'The Harp' as I found it fascinating.
What I see in the sculpture are strings of a harp that look like statues. Each string seems to be made of pillars with the head of an African American man on top. There seems to be 12  African Americans of different height each representing a string of the Harp. I think this is a very nice representation of life during that time. I wonder what that hand and the kneeling man represent. I wonder how long it took her to make this sculpture. I am also curious to know how she came up with this idea to represent the strings of the harp with men.
