1. Culture is a Predominant Force
     Acknowledging culture as a
predominant force in shaping
behaviors and values.
2. People are Served in Varying Degrees by the Dominant Culture
What works well for the
dominant culture may not
work well for everyone, or may
even work against others;
failure to acknowledge this
puts the burden of change on
minority groups.

3. The Group Identity for Individuals is As Important As Their Individual Identities
While treating people as
individuals is important, we
must also acknowledge the
'group identity'; the dignity of
the whole group must be
preserved

4. Diversity Within Cultures is Vast and Significant
It is important to account for
the rich diversity within
cultural groups; because of
class differences, there is often
more in common across
cultural groups than within
them.

5. Each Group Has Unique Cultural Needs
Every group has needs that
can't be met in the context of
the dominant culture;
organizations need several
paths to lead to the same goal
to account for more than just
the dominant culture.

You have to know your own values in order to recognize how they will influence the way you interact with peers, coworkers, parents, and members of your professional community.

Let's examine the issue of students taking extended time off of school to visit family in another country. As educators, we highly value education and the necessity for students to get the most out of the educational school year. We may make a judgement that some families don't value education, but we're not considering that many factors, both cultural and other, come into play in a family's decision to take their child out of school.
