         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jaap von Zweden, the musical director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2007, carries his group to take part in the musical canon by playing both textbook symphonies and concertos from composers like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky that represent the canon of Western art music in a straightforward manner as well as more modern compositions, like the score of "Star Wars"&nbsp; and "The Best of John Williams," and music from 20th century composers like Philip Glass, that demonstrate innovative thinking. I connect and see myself in the music performed as it is passionate, intricate music that is given almost new life and style by the DSO. Bold, captivating pieces are seemingly the "trademark" of the DSO, and many attribute the style to being a representation of the boldness of the city of Dallas itself. Not many kinds of music are missing from the repertoire as even pieces written by female composers are included, as well as operas and ballets. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Since Jaap von Zweden will soon be leaving Dallas to direct music in New York, I felt that the New York Philharmonic Orchestra was an appropriate second choice for analysis. Like the DSO, the NYPO's repertoire has a wide range from full scores, symphonies traditional of the Western canon, and pieces written by modern composers. However, the NYPO seems to differ from the DSO slightly in that its style is considered to be what I could only call more dramatic and traditional. There are more conventional pieces than unconventional, and there are not many if any pieces written by female composers in the repertoire. I do see myself in the music performed, but the more "rigid" style of this orchestra doesn't speak to me as much. </div>]]></description>

         <title>The group of composers to considered to be what the Western canon is comprised of is also thought of by many to be &quot;...an elite cadre, and the chances that a new member will be admitted seem slim.&quot; Although this is somewhat true, it is a rigid way of thinking that subtly discourages attention being drawn towards female composers or composers of color. Today, however, we see more attempts to break the &quot;status quo&quot; of the Western Canon.</title>

         <title>&quot;...figure out if the topic of the day is absolutely about a composer and his musical contributions, or if the theme for that unit is about a concept -- sonata form, da capo arias, nineteenth-century art song, ostinato bass, impressionism, etc.&quot; People aware of the Western canon agree that it&#39;s riddled with an increasingly ancient and unspoken notion that only the work of a classically-trained European male composer would be considered the standard to earn respect from the musical world. However, the quote from above helps expose more to me than just that concept. Each composer includes certain stylistic techniques that make up the intricacies of the canon, and it&#39;s fascinating to be able to look at a single composer and observe how their handful of personal &quot;technical flares&quot; contribute something different to and fit together with others inside a ridiculously broad concept of art music. </title>
