Africa's Development

Finding work in Africa is difficult. In 2016, sub-Saharan Africa experienced a 1.4% GDP increase, but it didn’t originate from capitalist practices. The growth in GDP came because of industrial structural changes. Africa has become an automation-based country. The structural changes that happened did not benefit people, but rather the companies.

I closely associated this article with the Globalization Project because companies are choosing their rights over the rights of the workers. There was no mention of a government influence, which reinforces the idea of development as a private undertaking.

IBM India

India has been home to IBM for decades. They now have more employees in a foreign country than any other company. They are partaking in all levels of jobs like tech support, cloud service monitoring, software writing, and app research and development. They created a market that will help poorer communities as well.

This is a perfect example of Foreign Direct Investment that works. IBM didn’t just see a cheaper labor force, but saw a market that could benefit the community around them. A lot of projects that stem from IBM are centered around giving back to the community.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/28/technology/ibm-india.html

Chinese Foreign Aid

Russia has been receiving financial aid from China since 2000, about $36.6 billion. China was interested in giving loans to Russia so they could have access to the russian oil supply. There are other countries receiving foreign aid too, like North Korea, who rely heavily on the aid.

This makes me think of Foreign Direct Investment, but in a negative light. The biggest interest for China to help Russia is to get the oil they have. North Korea used FDIs too much, and are now hyper dependent on Chinese aid, just how the sociological perspective on FDIs predicted.

http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/10/11/russia-is-the-biggest-recipient-of-chinese-foreign-aid-north-korea/

Africa Bans Used Clothes

East Africa is trying their hand at textile manufacturing, but the industry is being suffocated by second hand clothing from the west. More people are trying to sell used clothes rather than selling the clothes made there. They want to be able to grow a their own pace, with the resources they provide themselves.

In the short term, sharing clothes with those that needed it was a great help, however, the markets have been flooded. This is a great example of FDIs gone wrong; East Africa cannot escape the dependency imposed on them by the west.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/12/world/africa/east-africa-rwanda-used-clothing.html

Ex-Im Bank Revival

The Trump Administration wants to utilize the Ex-Im Bank in order to get the U.S. trading with other countries. Trump wants to use government money to support U.S. businesses. Foreign companies are receiving aid from their governments, and Trump wants to be able to compete on the global scale.

Keynes would love this plan. His idea about using government spending to boost aggregate demand is what the Trump Administration is trying to do. Keynes wanted to see the state actively participate in the economy, which is exactly what Trump is trying to do by reinstating the Ex-Im Bank.

http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/09/27/u-s-chamber-of-commerce-wants-to-make-ex-im-bank-great-again/
