As an example, the UW Tacoma equity statement is specific to their library, which falls under the larger brand umbrella of UW as a school. As I mentioned earlier, I feel that a lot of folks put out these statements to "check the box", and that they aren't necessarily really doing the work. In these particular cases it definitely creates a cognitive dissonance between what is being said and what is being done as far as their brand elements are concerned. The MIT land acknowledgement similarly is just kind of there to be there, and doesn't really provide any additional support or cohesiveness to the rest of MIT's branding materials.

 Again, using North Seattle College as a stronger example, I think they do a really good job of aligning their brand elements with the statements that they are creating. Having read the statements on their website first and then gone back to look at their mission, social media, etc., it felt like their was a lot of intentionality around connecting everything in a cohesive way. Even if there are some areas in which they could use some work (because no one is perfect; there is always room for improvement), as a viewer it looks and feels like they are trying to keep their branding and messaging on point.

In the cases of the UW Tacoma equity statement and the MIT Land acknowledgement, I would say that they are pretty lacking, and fall under the category of "checking the box". The statements are pretty bare bones and don't actually reflect anything about their values. There are a lot of things that they could do to not only have statements, but show that they are doing the work. I think that the two examples discussed below are more exemplary in this regard.  

For North Seattle College (NSC), I was really impressed that they stated their positions around equity and inclusion and presented relevant information about their organization and the current work they are doing in those areas. Not only that, but in their land acknowledgement section, they gave different versions of the land acknowledgement AND relevant action items and activities for each, as well as a guide to Indigenous curriculum. 

I liked that the UC Davis land acknowledgement statement gives the relevance of the land acknowledgement, how and when it should be used, and appropriate pronunciation of Indigenous words. I think that, similar to NSC, they should move beyond just the acknowledgement piece and should have actionable items as well, effectively, putting their money where their mouth is.
