The first thing you see is the black kid in the center and the cap gun in his hand, 2 black kids are in very serious positions while the white kid is smiling. The biggest thing in this photo is the contrast between emotion and skin color.

Untitled - Photo of Duke Ellington from 1960

Structure:
Ellington is centered in the photo, leaning over a piano. There are some objects on a table in the foreground, but they are unfocused, not pulling the attention away from Ellington. His back is curved in an interesting sillhouette
Lighting:
The light source is a lamp on the piano, in frame
Ellington is backlit creating a sharp silhouette against the wall behind him

Artist statement: I think this is a very honest profile of Ellington, likely in his home. I think this sort of profile of celebrity does a lot to humanize a musician/the creative process

The shapes and composition of this image are really well placed. Additionally, the light facing the mens facing makes the image really strong. I really like the shadows the men and background create. Lastly, the mens facial expression for me creates a storyline.

reflection:
I choose this photo because I couldn't quite understand what Parks was trying to convey and that is what I found interesting. I enjoyed trying to understand what he trying to convey.

A black baby looking at a black doll while pointing at a white doll.
On the right page, I see his parents (I assume) who seem to be nice and kind.
This especially stood out to me and strongly conveying a specific information: Doll Test. Because this is a photo of a magazine, it's hard to see its lighting and contrast, but I can tell the focus of the camera is the people.
After reading the explanation on the website, this was the experiment about segregation in the US: most kids preferred a white doll.
