"We can see that she was a pretty girl, even exceptionally so, but now it is apparent that life has been little that she expected, and disappointment has began to hang in her face" (Hansberry 24).

- Ruth's overall beautiful appearance displays to the reader a clear image of her pure and good intended personality. Her hanging face shows how despite her efforts her beauty is distorted by struggles.

-Ruth faces several financial obstacles in her life, as she lives in a worn-down house in need of refurnishing.
-"Weariness has, in fact, won in this room" (Hansberry 23).
-She is constantly taking care of everyone in her family and there is rarely someone to take care of her.
-"Girl, you better start eating and looking after yourself better. You almost thin as Travis" (Hansberry 41).
-She cannot afford a larger house and therefore, her son Travis is forced to sleep on a lousy living room couch.
-In a fight with Walter, Ruth retaliates, "It ain't his fault that he can't get to bed no earlier nights 'cause he got a bunch of crazy good-for-nothing clowns sitting up running their mouths in what is supposed to be his bedroom after ten o'clock at night (Hansberry 27).

Ruth's Relationships

--Ruth and Walter have a strained, frustrating relationship. Walter feels like Ruth doesn't support him. He dramatically says, "Man say: I got to change my life, I'm choking to death, baby! And his woman say-- (in utter anguish as he brings his fists down on his thighs)-- Your eggs is getting cold!" (Hansberry 33-34) Ruth is impatient with his laziness, defiance, and his lack of frugality. When Walter gives Travis fifty cents one morning after she says he can't have it, "(Ruth watches both of them with murder in her eyes. Walter stands and stares back at her with defiance, and suddenly reaches into his pocket again on an afterthought)," (Hansberry 31) to give Travis more money.
--Ruth and Mama are close, and it shows in their intimate conversations. Mama affectionately calls Ruth "honey," "child," and "girl," and Ruth wants to ensure that Mama isn't pressured out of her money, as she says "(Sincerely, but also self-righteously) Now that's your money. It ain't got nothing to do with me. We all feel like that--Walter and Bennie and me-- even Travis" (Hansberry 43). However, Ruth gets annoyed at Mama for meddling with the raising of Travis, and for spoiling him.
--Ruth and Beneatha get along well enough, but Ruth sometimes feels that the younger woman is silly and disrespectful. Ruth says that Beneatha is "Fresh-- just fresh as salt, this girl!" Beneatha sometimes has to remind her, "Ruth, I'm twenty years old" (Hansberry 46)

- Wants to build a happy family, believing one step towards this goal would be owning a bigger and better place to live.
-Dream is deferred by a lack of money

- Ruth wants a happier relationship with Walter, but is aware of the negative tension between the two of them. She says to Mama, "Something is happening between Walter and me. I don't know what it is-- but he needs something-- something I can't give him anymore. He needs this chance, Lena" (Hansberry 42). She wants Walter to get his liquor store if it means they'll be happier.
