It's not just about writing their thoughts down on a chalkboard or whiteboard anymore. Having students utilize technology with visible thinking routines can deepen students' thinking and become part of their daily classroom routines in a more 21st Century way.

For this routine, I would have the question “What represents you in Health and PE?” written on the Cacoo board and have the catagories of "color, symbol and image".

Students would again use their devices to complete this visible thinking routine. The use of their technology allows them to search images and symbols that they would otherwise have to draw if not using technology.

Technology in this routine gives them the opportunity to really show out in terms of their participation. They get to showcase a symbol and image that truly represents themselves in PE.

TN State PE Standard: FPA.2.5 Creates a personal plan for physical activity.

ISTE Standard 1.6: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

In this visible thinking routine, I would have some common phrases students have heard in our Wellness class discussions.

“No pain, no gain”, “There’s no point in exercising unless you can do it for 45 minutes or more”, “I can eat what I want because I’m active”, “You should warm up before you stretch and always stretch before and after exercise”

Students would have to determine if the statement is fact or fiction depending on what we have discussed in class. They would type their name and defend their stance explaining why they believe it is fact or fiction.

This again allows students to complete their visible thinking routine on their devices. They may even be allowed to do some research with this type of routine. If so, they would need to cite their source within the Cacoo document.

TN State Lifetime Wellness Standards:

HS.PW.4 Implement the health-related and skill-related components of fitness.

HS.PW.6 Describe and apply principles related to physical activity (i.e., principles of training, target heart rate, warmup/cool-down).

ISTE Standard 1.6: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

This routine asks learners to consider ideas, questions, or problems by silently responding in writing both to the prompt and the thoughts of others. This “silent conversation” provides learners with time to follow through thoughts without interruption by choosing when they are ready to consider other points of view and make comments.

Too often, information can be accepted at face value without any supporting evidence. This routine is designed to explore the complexity of the realm of truth. It encourages slow looking, perspective taking, seeking supporting evidence, and analysis to uncover the core and accuracy of information. Some questions that might emerge as students use the routine are: Is there supporting evidence? Are many facts and figures reported? Does it fit with what you have learned before? Never be afraid to ask questions.
