How Tiberius came into power and how he died

http://quatr.us/romans/history/tiberius.htm

Tiberius was born on November 16 42 B.C. When he was three years old his mother Livia, divorced his father, Tiberius Nero, and married Octavius, who would later become the emperor Augustus. His father, Augustus always made him do tasks related to the government so that he could have some experience. Tiberius life got hard when we was in his early 30s because when his wife's (Vipsania Aggripina) father died, he was forced to divorce Vipsania and marry her mother. A while after, his brother Drusus suddenly died.

Tiberius got closer and closer to being the next emperor. He did a lot of fighting in the army and was very successful there but decided to leave to Rhodes and not participate in anything that had to do with politics. Augustus got mad at him and wouldn't let him visit Livia. When Augustus was dying he didn't have anyone to take his place other than Tiberius and he let him go back to Rome. He was pretty much forced to agree to be Augustus's heir. When Augustus died in 14 AD Tiberius became emperor. He argued he didn't want to be emperor and claimed that he was too old (he was 55) but the senate voted to make Tiberius the next emperor. Tiberius died in 37 AD, he threw a javelin at a ceremonial game hurt his shoulder and that started to make him ill. He was 78 years old leaving Caligula as the next emperor.

Our personal opinion on Tiberius

Tiberius was very respectful to the senate house. Since Tiberius did not want to be emperor he let other people control him. Doing this it made it harder for people to trust him because he ruled differently, until later on. He was extremely helpful in the wars in Germany and Armenia. He had banished astrologers, disallowed Egyptian and Jewish cults, subdued riots and removed the right of sanctuary. Tiberius was definitely not a tyrant. He kept things in line, but let other people do what they pleased. His death was tragic having injured his shoulder throwing a javelin, became extremely ill and went into lapsed coma.

In my opinion Tiberius was a great emperor. Even though he was brought into the part by his mother he came through. It was a little rough for him in the beginning, but he persevered for the sake of his empire; thats what matters. He did great in battle at Germany and Armenia. He reinforced a lot of rules such as banishing Jewish and Egyptian cults and subduing riots.
