Irie: Refusal of the Call - Comfort Zone by Youth Ambassadors Program CIED at Georgetown

Try something that takes you out of your comfort zone and talk about it in a short Padlet post. This could be cooking a new recipe, practicing Spanish on a zoom call with a YA partner. Of course, it must be safe and follow local public health guidelines. This is an opportunity to get creative!

Good day,
This week I stepped out of my comfort zone to be myself. I met friends I haven't seen in years and they knew me as a clear faced girl. And now that I have acne, I was afraid that they would judge me but they actually didn't. We had a fun day together and I'm feeling confident.

I’ve always been a little shy, that is not talking and coming forward as much as I would like to. Especially during the past year, where life went virtual, it took some sort of confidence and bravery to turn on your camera and unmute yourself and part-take in what’s going on. I think I’ve been more involved and active, making more of an effort to participate and not only listen attentively, I try my best to participate in this program, and in school more, and I’ve been more confident and comfortable speaking, and I’m happy about that.

Teaching my class (Doiron's brief story)

Throughout my academic years I have been known to understand subjects that involve numbers a lot easier than my peers. However, despite being a group leader many times before I was never given the responsibility to teach. On one occasion my P.O.A (Principles Of Accounts) teacher was very busy and seeing that I had gotten the work and was blitzing through sums very easily. Seeing this she asked if for the next 30 minutes if I could stand in front of the class and teach. Although I was nervous at first as it is usually hard to articulate myself I stood and tried my best. I am proud to say for that upcoming exam all of my peers passed getting full marks for the section that I taught.

I've always been known to be a very shy and introverted person and over the past year I've realized that that factor of my persona has changed tremendously because during virtual school I quickly realized that that fear of being judged for being outspoken has went away. I started participating more and have even been asked by some teachers to explain to the class on a certain topic of which I would have been really good in. Though it has not really been easy to come out of my shell, I feel more comfortable and at peace when I am speaking. Ive even pushed myself as far as to start public speaking and partake in speech competitions. I must say that this year felt rewarding being with me being more outspoken than I ever was.

I had to swim for a grade in school. And I can't swim. I used to watch kids jump off the springboard/diving board . I liked it so much that one day I decided to jump it too. There was one problem though it was the third pool so the deepest pool and I couldn't swim. I doubted a bit, but then I said to myself I'm not going to die. I jumped off it but couldn't feel the bottom of the pool so I just swam underwater until I felt the edge.i got out of the pool feeling like "the man". I did it several times that day.

In my years of living I've known myself as a shy person. I dislike begging or asking for anything. I know myself as independent, During the first time of the pandemic I was too laid back and didn't take it as serious as I should. In my end of year report it showed badly. At that time I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone just for my educational sake. I then had to ask my peers for the assignments and begged the teachers for extra classes. At the end of the term going to exams I did some past papers and I did well and I went in exam proudly.

The first time I was selected as prefect I had many jobs to do one of them was to keep a class in order. I was in charge of a 9th grade class. I was not a very outspoken person so this was the hardest thing I had to do. At first I was a bit nervous because I was not experience in keeping a class in order. The class then began making noise and making the class messy. I got very frustrated because no one would listen and then I stepped out of my comfort zone and shouted to get everyone attention. I told them to quiet down with the noise and clean up the mess they made or they would be reported to the principle. They quickly listened and everyone was surprise to see someone who was very quiet organize one of the noisiest classes.
